This is a craft that my son was really proud to showcase. It’s not your typical Valentine’s Day box. After the holiday, he displayed it in his bedroom. It’s stood the test of time and still sits in his room today. It’s also a great base if you’re looking for a different type of animal – like a dragon.
How To Make Your DIY Dinosaur Valentines Box
We found all of our craft supplies either around the house or at our local craft store. I’ll leave links to Amazon (commissioned sale links) where you can purchase your own supplies as well!
Materials You’ll Need For Dinosaur Valentines Box:
- Empty Cardboard Cereal Box
- Small Cardboard Box (Like A Granola Bar Box)
- Empty Paper Towel Cardboard Roll
- Green Craft Paper Roll
- Large Googly Eyes (2)
- White Card Stock Paper
- Green Card Stock Paper
- Small Heart Stickers
- Wire Hanger (Like From Dry Cleaner)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue Gun
- Scotch Tape
To start your DIY Dinosaur Valentines Box, cut an opening slot on the long side of your cereal box by using your scissors. You can stab the tip of the scissors into the box and cut the opening out.
Wrap box boxes with green craft paper, using your scotch tape to secure the ends.
Re-cut open your slot, so the valentine cards can be inserted.
Cut two 2-inch cylinders from the empty paper towel roll. These are going to be the feet. Wrap each one with green craft paper. Roll the edges into the inside and secure with scotch tape.
Using a hot glue gun, secure the feet to the opposite long side as the slot. Also, secure the small box to the side of the large box. Be sure not to cover the slot.
Use your pencil to draw a “v”, one the side of the small box, which will be the opening of the mouth. Repeat on the other side. Connect each “v” in the center. Use this as a stencil to create a mouth opening and cut it open.
Add some toes onto the feet. Draw half circles on your white card stock and cut them out. Using your scissors, make a slit on the feet that are attached. Slide the half circles on.
On your white card stock, draw a zig zag pattern for the teeth. Cut it out. Secure with your glue gun onto the mouth opening. Cut off any excess that’s unnecessary.
Make the same zig zag pattern with the green card stock. Set aside. Add Googly Eyes and heart sticker nose.
Lastly, you need to add the tail. Use the wire hanger to bend into a tail shape. Make it curves around to provide stability. Attach with glue gun. Cover with green craft paper. Add your green spikes that you made from the card stock. Attach with a glue gun.
You can create a heart, as the finishing touch, for the bottom of the tail! Don’t be worried if your dinosaur looks different or isn’t perfect – it’s unique to you.
