What do you need to get a REAL ID license in New Jersey? The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission requires two proofs of residential address, proof of social security number, and an additional six points of Identification.

You can obtain a photo ID from the bank, the post office, college or university, or in the military.

Is everyone required to get a REAL ID? You are not required to get a REAL ID; however, starting May 7, 2025, if you typically use your driver license or non-driver ID (instead of a passport or other form of ID) to fly within the U.S., you probably want a REAL ID.

However, if you want to fly anywhere in the United States, you will need either a Real ID or a valid passport. You will not be able to use your regular driver's license. The cost of a Real ID is $35. If your license is due to be renewed, you can do it at that time.

Licensing Centers

Appointments are required for: First-time license/permit (REAL ID or standard). If available, you can take your knowledge test at your permit appointment. Upgrade your class D license to a CDL.

Walk-ins are only allowed for first time licenses/IDs/permits, name changes, and red decals at Licensing Centers. Other MVC transactions that can't be completed online require an appointment that customers need to schedule at NJMVC.gov. Appointments at Licensing and Vehicle Centers must be scheduled at NJMVC.gov.
