The municipality has stopped the dog tax as of the 2024 tax year. The municipality can still charge taxes for 2022 and 2023, if there is a reason to do so. If you meet all the conditions, you can also apply for a refund.
No dog tax in 2024
The information below applies to the dog tax in 2022 and 2023.
Do you have a dog? Then you must pay the dog tax. The tax is higher if you have more dogs. It makes no difference if the dog is big or small. You pay tax even if your dog never goes outside.
You pay the dog tax if there are 1 or more dogs living with you in your home. Or if you have a dog kennel. The dog is often registered under the name of the person who owns it, cares for it or is in charge of it.
Pay the tax within 6 weeks. The final date for payment (due date) is stated on the assessment. You can:

Make an objection
Have you received an assessment for the dog tax? And do you not agree with the assessment or the fine you received? Then you can file an objection to the dog tax.
Apply for a refund
Do you no longer have a dog? Or are you moving to another municipality? Ask for a reimbursem*nt for the dog tax for the rest of the year. This is called ontheffing (tax refund). You do not need to pay for the months in which you no longer had a dog. There are 2 ways to apply for a refund.
Complete the online form. You need DigiD and your assessment notice.

Your letter should state:
- your name
- your address
- the date
- the reference number of the assessment and the type of tax
- the reason you are applying for a refund
- the date when your situation changed
- your signature
Are you filing a request for someone else? Send an authorisation (machtiging). This is a letter which states that this person is giving you permission to apply.
How long does it take?
When you apply in writing, you will receive an answer within 8 weeks.
