Do you need a passport to fly domestic in Australia?
You’ve landed in Australia and you’re keen to start exploring the beauty this country has to offer but you want to know if your passport is needed when travelling interstate. The simple answer is no, you don’t need a passport when flying domestic within Australia as you’re not travelling through customs or crossing any international borders. Domestic travel just means you’re flying from one city or town to another, all within the same country. For example, flying from Sydney to Perth is considered domestic travel as you're not leaving Australia.
Do you need a passport to book flights online within Australia?
When booking domestic flights within Australia from your phone or laptop, you don't need to use your passport. When you book online, typically you don't need any form of identification. It's not until you arrive at the airport prior to departure that you are required to show your identification (but it doesn't have to be a passport).
What do you need for interstate travel within Australia?
You just need a valid form of identification. That being your driver’s licence, proof of age card, student ID, original or certified copy of your birth certificate or citizenship document. You can also use your passport solely for ID purposes if you want to. You'll need to ensure your ID matches your flight’s booking name and boarding pass.
