Every year my kids get to create a DIY Valentine’s Day box for their class party. This year’s ideas included a unicorn valentine box for my daughter and a dinosaur valentine box for my son. I decided to share these valentine box ideas with you and provide free templates!
The templates I am sharing come with free SVG cut files so you can use your Cricut machine, or you can use my colored PDF printables to cut withscissors. If your kids are getting involved, make sure to have a pair of kid-friendlyscissorsfor safety. If you are using a cutting machine like Cricut, I always let my kids help me load and unload the mat/materials, and they love helping that way!

Unicorn Valentine Box Step-by-Step Instructions
For my Valentine boxes, I am using some 65-pound card stock and some glitter card stock for the unicorn. You may want to make additional decorative pieces like ears, eyes, rhinestones, extra sparkles, flowers, and a horn before you start.
Of course, I am using my Cricut cutting machine, but you can use scissors and hand-cut these projects if you want.
The Horn:
To make the unicorn’s horn, take a square piece of paper and roll it into a cone. Glue the cone together with hot glue so it dries quickly. I used gold glitter card stock. Next, glue the horn to the unicorn box. Use a hot glue gun to be sure the cone stays in place.
The Unicorn:
- Using the straight edge and a pencil, mark out a thin rectangular slot on the box for valentine envelopes and cards.
- Cut out the slot using your Exacto knife.
- Turn the box lid over once the slot is cut out and wrap it using the wrapping paper. I am using white for the unicorn, but you can use any color you choose. A fun way to get your kids involved is to let them choose colors or even paint the unicorn valentine box themselves.
- Use the Exacto knife to cut the extra wrapping paper from the slot so the slot remains open. Fold the excess wrapping paper under the slot and make sure everything is smooth. Use tape inside the box to keep the wrapping paper secure.
- Once the wrapping is over, it is time to start decorating! This is another great way to get your children to participate.
- Use hot glue or have your kids use the glue stick to apply all the decorations and facial features to the unicorn’s head.
- Add embellishments like flowers, ribbons, or rhinestones. Now you have an adorable, magical Valentine’s Day gift and card receptacle!
