Hello everyone,
This sweater is very soft and cozy. I love making top down sweaters because I can try the sweater on as often as I want or need to as I am doing the crochet work, to see how it fits and how it looks on me. If the sweater is too tight or too loose for what I want then I can make the size adjustment by unraveling the section that I am not happy with, and then re-crochet the section until I am happy with the fit. Because you do not want to have to unravel and re-crochet a large section, it is important for you to check the fit often. Check early, check often! Both crochet and knitting with a minimum of mistakes is much more enjoyable if you can keep away from doing a lot of work on a garment that does not fit to your satisfaction. And remember, making mistakes, especially small fixable mistakes, is a normal part of the process. “Learn from your mistakes” is the popular expression that is used in the English language.
This ‘Crochet Top Down Easy Sweater’ is easy to make, as I only use one stitch pattern, called “herringbone half double crochet stitch – hhdc.” Detailed written instructions are below for sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL. A step by step video tutorial is provided on my YouTube channel, where I work on a size small. I have included the youtube tutorial for this sweater on the bottom of this page.
Notes (Forming the sweater):
The sweater is worked in one piece from the top down, in the round. Once the yoke is completed and connected, a total of 8 increases is done in every row to form the front and back and the sleeves, and then the sleeves are marked off and you continue working the body in the round. Then you go back and join the shoulder piece. See below for pictures of the process. Then you will crochet each sleeve in the round, finishing with the ribbing.
The pattern is written for the small size with larger sizes in parentheses ( ).
Special Stitches:
Hhdc: Yarn over (yo), insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop directly through first loop on the hook. YO and pull through the remaining two loops.
Hhdc2tog: Yarn over (yo), insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop directly through first loop on the hook, YO (two loops on hook), insert your hook to the next st, pull up a loop directly through first loop on the hook and pull through the remaining three loops.

Adding the ribbing
Ribbing is done with 1 size smaller size of crochet hook which is 4 mm in this tutorial.
At the end of the round, ch 8, starting from the second ch, 1 sc to each ch, 7 sc
1 sl st to next 2 sts
1 scblo to 6 sts, 1 sc to last st and ch 1, turn your work, 1 scblo to 7 sts, 1 sl st to next 2 sts
turn your work, 1 scblo to 7 sts, 1 sl st to next 2 sts
Continue making ribbing all around the edge.
At the end of the round, connect the the beginning and ending ribbing pieces together with sl st.
Fasten off and weave the ends.
Shoulder piece, add the yarn in the middle of added 4 chains, 1 hhdc to each st, 1hhdc3tog totwo edges
sl st to closethe round.
Continue in rounds with 1 hhdcto each stand make 2 decreases in every 3 rd row.
Use SM for the beginning of each row that you made decrease which will help you when to decrease for the next (every 3rd row)
The reason is that the decrease is done under arm piece because it’s less noticeable, and this is also where we started, so it will be easier to see where the decreases are done.
