Common Misunderstandings about Freezes (2024)

It is a common misconception that Ripple or others can freeze XRP, similar to how centralized services like PayPal can suspend your account and prevent you from accessing your funds. In reality, while the XRP Ledger does have a freeze feature, it can only be used on issued tokens, not on XRP. No one can freeze XRP.

Tokens in the XRP Ledger are fundamentally different than XRP. Tokens always exist in trust lines, which can be frozen. XRP exists in accounts, which cannot be frozen.

Isn't XRP Just Ripple's Token?

No, XRP is different from tokens. XRP is the only native asset on the XRP Ledger and is required to conduct transactions on the XRP Ledger. XRP has no counterparty, meaning that when someone holds XRP, they are not holding a liability, they are holding the actual currency, XRP. Due to this fact, XRP CANNOT be frozen by any entity or individual.

Can Ripple Freeze My Tokens? Or the XRP Ledger Foundation?

The XRP Ledger is decentralized so that no one party has control over it—not Ripple, not the XRP Ledger Foundation, and not anyone else.

The issuer of a token can freeze your trust line for that token specifically. They can't freeze the rest of your account, or any tokens from different issuers, and they can't stop you from using the XRP Ledger.

Furthermore, token issuers can voluntarily and permanently give up their ability to freeze tokens. This "No Freeze" setting is intended to allow tokens to behave more like physical cash, in that third parties can't stop you from using it.

But I Heard Ripple Froze Jed McCaleb's XRP?

This is a misrepresentation of events that actually happened in 2015–2016. Jed McCaleb, a Ripple founder who left the company in 2013, attempted to sell over $1 million US worth of XRP on Bitstamp, a custodial exchange. Ripple representatives argued that this sale would breach an agreement that Jed and Ripple made in 2014. At Ripple's request, Bitstamp froze Jed's Bitstamp account and took the dispute to court. The case was eventually settled with both sides declaring they were happy with the outcome.

Notably, the "freeze" did not happen on the XRP Ledger and did not involve the XRP Ledger's freeze feature. Like any custodial exchange, Bitstamp has the ability to freeze its users' accounts and stop them from trading or withdrawing funds, especially if those funds are involved in a legal dispute.

In contrast, when trading in the XRP Ledger's decentralized exchange, you custody your own assets so no one can stop you from dealing in XRP.

FAQs

What is the freezing answer? ›

Freezing is a change of state from liquid to solid. It occurs when the particles in a liquid lose energy, usually due to a drop in temperature. The particles stop moving as much and form a fixed structure or shape. The temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid is called the freezing point.

How cold would it have to be to freeze instantly? ›

At absolute zero, matter has no vibration at all and there is basically no temperature. That's why it is called absolute zero. So it's really cold in space. If your body was exposed to such extremely cold temperatures, you would freeze almost instantly.

What do you think will happen as the water freezes? ›

Point out that when water freezes, the water molecules have slowed down enough that their attractions arrange them into fixed positions. Water molecules freeze in a hexagonal pattern and the molecules are further apart than they were in liquid water. Note: The molecules in ice would be vibrating.

How does the temperature of water affect the time it takes to freeze? ›

Evaporation. One explanation of the effect is that as the hot water cools, it loses mass to evaporation. With less mass, the liquid has to lose less heat to cool, and so it cools faster. With this explanation, the hot water freezes first, but only because there's less of it to freeze.

What are 5 examples of freezing? ›

Give me 10 examples of freezing
  • FREEZING OF WATER TO FORM ICE IN AN ICE CUBES.
  • FORMATION OF SNOW.
  • CONGEALING OF BACON GREASE AS IT COOLS.
  • SOLIDIFICATION OF MELTED CANDLE WAX.
  • LAVA HARDENING INTO SOLID ROCK.

What is freezing responses? ›

If you often feel disconnected or numb when faced with stressful situations, this may be a sign that you're going into the freeze response. Some other signs of the freeze response include: Feeling like you can't move your limbs. Feeling paralyzed in fear. Having a panic attack.

How cold is a killing freeze? ›

A freeze will occur when temperatures reach or fall below 32 degrees. While some plants are able to with stand a brief period at or just below 32 degrees, most plants will not survive once temperatures drop to or below 28 degrees (often refer to as a killing freeze).

Does hot water freeze faster? ›

"It all depends on how fast the cooling occurs, and it turns out that hot water will not freeze before cold water but will freeze before lukewarm water. Water at 100 degrees C, for example, will freeze before water warmer than 60 degrees C but not before water cooler than 60 degrees C.

Can a human freeze at 32 degrees? ›

40 to 50 degrees can cause death in one to three hours. 32 to 40 degrees can cause death in 30 to 90 minutes. 32 degrees or less can cause death in as little as 15 to 45 minutes.

What are some fun facts about freezing? ›

Fun Fact. A liquid's freezing point is the same as its melting point in the solid-state. For example, water's freezing point is 0° Celsius (32° Fahrenheit), but the melting point of water in its solid state is also 0° Celsius.

Is water heavier when frozen? ›

While liquid water and frozen water have different names and some different properties, the kind of matter remains the same, and for a specific sample of water, the weight does not change. The volume of a sample is not conserved across a phase change. Freeze water and its volume will increase.

What expands when frozen? ›

Water is the only known non-metallic substance that expands when it freezes; its density decreases and it expands approximately 9% by volume. Have the children record their results and interpretations in their Ice Investigator Journals.

Which liquid freezes the fastest? ›

When making an ice rink hot, water should be used because it is the fastest freezing liquid.

How fast does water freeze at 0 degrees? ›

Grab some water bottles and place them in your freezer. Make sure it's undisturbed for a few hours, getting it to that supercooled state. The exact freezing time? Typically, it takes about two-and-a-half to three hours.

Does water freeze at exactly 32? ›

Water will freeze at 0 degrees Celsius, which is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Any time the temperature drops below these, liquid water will begin to turn into ice. Water behaves very differently than other liquids. When liquid water freezes, the molecules spread out, making ice less dense than liquid water.

What is the definition of freezing? ›

Freezing is the process when a liquid turns into a solid. Freezing occurs when heat is lost from an object, which causes the molecules to slow down and form tighter bonds. One example of freezing is when water turns into ice.

What is the freezing temperature? ›

Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius, which is equivalent to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the freezing point? ›

Freezing Point Definition – The Freezing point is the temperature of a liquid at which it changes its state from liquid to solid at atmospheric pressure. At freezing point, these two phases viz. liquid and solid exist in equilibrium i.e. at this point both solid state and liquid state exist simultaneously.

What is the freezing process? ›

Freezing is a phase transition where a liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is lowered below its freezing point. In accordance with the internationally established definition, freezing means the solidification phase change of a liquid or the liquid content of a substance, usually due to cooling.
