It seems anything can be ‘mined’ these days. Whether wireless coverage for IoT (internet of things) devices (Helium), crypto currency POW (proof of work), what you listen to/watch (mode earn app) or even your location. One of the leading apps for rewarding location data, and best of the ones I’ve used so far, is Coin App.
Coin App has been around since 2019 and has more than a million reported users, giving it some amount of credibility. The premise of the application, is to earn ‘Coin’ via keeping the app running on your mobile (in the foreground or background) while moving about the world in your ever day life. All you need is a data connection, WiFi, or GPS, a decent data plan (it doesn’t use a lot, but every little helps) and a decent battery life.
To increase rewards, you can also watch adds, participate in surveys, or download and run supporting apps (mainly games) to earn ‘airdrops’ of the app’s Coin (the in app currency). When you have enough Coin, you can exchange it for crypto currency (XYO or Bitcoin) or physical products like Bluetooth speakers.
I’ve recently been doing a lot of walking, to think as well as get some daily exercise, and it seemed like the perfect way to combine the activity with some earnings. Pretty sure there is a quote somewhere for not doing something you enjoy for free but almost certain this wasn’t what they meant.
Getting started: Easy
After downloading the app from the play store, I decided to try it out. After nearly walking into various fences, trees and even a ditch, I finally managed to stop watching the little blue squares light up as they were ‘mined’ and it’s been pretty good since. I even left it on while driving to see the kids (a 6 hour round trip) which defiantly saw a large improvement to the earnings though I had to put my phone on the back seat to avoid temptation.
The only things I had to do (as I’m not sure its worth buying a premium packages which increase rewards and functionality), was turn off my screen lock/saver. This is mainly due to background mining (when your app is out of focus) is limited to how active you are on the app per day. Due to sensitive apps on the phone (like banking), I have to turn it back on, especially when out and about, which makes it a bit of a pain.
Fun Level: Fair
I am actually surprised how ‘fun’ I’ve found the app. I guess it has the same charm as a Fitbit, but seeing a ‘reward’ going up instead of steps. There is actually a feature which rewards steps in Coin, but it doesn’t work on my phone.
Although, I have to admit that I have had to ‘ban’ it from my walks (I previously didn’t take my phone) as its extremely distracting and defeats the purpose of getting away from technology.
Free to Play: Yes (Limited)
While it initially felt a bit silly to add this one, after thinking about similar apps that I’ve been playing with recently, I decided that it was necessary. Unlike a lot of the others, Coin App is free to get going. However, the free version is pretty limited (in both reward potential and features).
Play To Earn: Yes
I’ve not yet got enough points to try for one of the physical rewards, but I have exchanged some of the App Coin for XYO and extracted it to my Coinbase account, proving quickly to be a way you can earn. It’s not much, £3/4~, but for something you leave on in the background, its not too bad.
There are various ways to increase rewards. From buying a hardware device (there is a claim they only charge shipping), HODL (Hold on for dear life)the app Coin or XYO, or purchase one of their premium memberships.
One of the best ways to earn Coin (at least I have found) is to use the bonuses for using other apps. Download and open the app, leave it overnight, and delete the app in the morning/when you have claimed all the time based rewards. Pretty sure this wasn’t the intent behind the app rewards, but who want’s to keep TicTok on their phone for any longer than necessary.
The app seems well suited for those that travel a lot and have devices with a good connection and battery life. The starting plan seems to be a good introduction to the app, but I will continue to test and experiment for at least a month before I invest any capital as I feel the earnings might be too low for someone with my somewhat localised lifestyle.
If nothing else, its been enlightening to see how Geomining/locational data can be extracted/used (big frowny face to all those services, you know who they are, that get this personal data for free).
Please keep in mind that this is NOT financial advice in any way, shape or form. I am not a financial advisor, financial expert or magical money making guru (I wish).
ALWAYS:
1. Do Your Own Research (DYOR)
2. Invest at Your Own Risk (IYOR)
3. Invest only what you are willing (not just what you can afford) to lose
4. Take ownership for your own decisions and actions
5. Take 24hrs, or at least a very long walk, before any major decision
Investing (especially in assets like cryptocurrency/unfinished projects) is volatile, and the RISKS ARE VERY HIGH. Lessen the risk by educating yourself and taking the time to research a project/game/creators/stakeholders (or those who would benefit from your hard earned cash) before investing.
