Clue nests are nests that can be found while training Woodcutting or emptying bird houses on Fossil Island. Searching them will give players a clue scroll of the indicated difficulty, leaving an empty bird nest (excluding beginner clue nests). Like clue scrolls, players can only have one of each type of clue nest in their possession. Players can toggle whether or not to receive clue nests by speaking to Arthur the Clue Hunter in Lumbridge.
There are five types of clue nests:
Clues are not awarded if the player already has a clue of that tier.

Woodcutting rates[edit | edit source]
The chance of obtaining a clue nest depends mainly on the player's Woodcutting level together with the type of tree that is chopped, similar to how the drop rate of skilling pets is determined.[1] In addition, the reward tiers unlocked by completing Combat Achievements grant a 5% boost to the drop rate of the corresponding clue tier, that is to say the easy, medium, hard, and elite clue nests.

Formula[edit | edit source]
Upon a successful skilling action, a roll is made for each clue tier one is eligible to receive (based on which types of clue are already owned) independently of the outcome of any of the other rolls.[2] For each tier of clue nest, the following formula is used to determine its drop chance, whereupon a roll is made if the player is eligible.[3]
The chance is in
Where:
- The base chance of receiving a clue nest from a specific tree type. These are the same base chances that determine the drop rate of the beaver pet.
- A multiplier of if the corresponding reward tier of Combat Achievements has been unlocked, or if it has not.
- The player's visible Woodcutting level. Visible boosts beyond level 99 are taken into account.[4]
- The clue tier modifier applied at the end based on the type of clue that is rolled.
Base chance[edit | edit source]
The table below displays the base chance of obtaining a clue nest according to tree type.[5]
Tree | Chance |
---|---|
Achey trees | 317,647 |
Normal trees | 317,647 |
Oak trees | 361,146 |
Willow trees | 289,286 |
Teak trees | 264,336 |
Juniper trees | 360,000 |
Maple trees | 221,918 |
Hollow trees | 214,367 |
Mahogany trees | 220,623 |
Arctic pine trees | 145,758 |
Yew trees | 145,013 |
Sulliusceps | 343,000 |
Magic trees | 72,321 |
Redwood trees | 72,321 |
Clue tier[edit | edit source]
The following modifiers are applied to the denominator of the drop chance, depending on the type of clue for which a roll attempt is made.[6]
Clue tier | Modifier | |
---|---|---|
Beginner | 0.2 | |
Easy | 1.7 | |
Medium | 2 | |
Hard | 3.3 | |
Elite | 10 |
Other factors[edit | edit source]
Equipping a ring of wealth (i) will double the rate at which clue nests are dropped while chopping trees in the Wilderness.[7]
The 10% uplift in the drop rate of bird nests granted by the Woodcutting cape does not apply to clue nests.[8]
Birdhouse rates[edit | edit source]
This article or section is incomplete and could do with improvement. Reason: Birdhouse clue nest mechanics are not confirmed and any rates we have are rough estimates. |
The chance of getting a clue, ring, egg, or empty nest from bird house trapping depends on the tier of birdhouse and the player's Hunter level (seed nests only depend on Hunter level). When collecting loot, 10 rolls are performed with a chance of providing these nests. It is possible to obtain multiple clues from the same birdhouse in a single one of these 10 rolls, but once at least one clue has been awarded, further rolls do not attempt to give clues.

The CA buff is applied to the "base chance" number *before* the formula is applied."

(...)] No, the elite rate wouldn't be changed by that. It rolls for each *eligible* tier independently of the others; you simply wouldn't be doing a roll for beginner/easy/medium/hard clues, but this wouldn't affect your chance of getting an elite one."
