We all have loose change sitting around, despite our promises to ourselves to roll ’em and bring ’em to the bank — or at least deposit them in one of those sorting machines. And while it’s no surprise that many 200-year-old coins are worth more than the standard value, it turns out that a 1970 quarter could be worth far more than 25 cents!
How much more? Well, a quarter listed on eBay recently sold for a whopping $35,000. Yes, you read that correctly: That’s a five-figure sum for a single piece of change.
Why put so much money into some run-of-the-mill pocket change? Going back more than a half century, some of these unique quarters were formed over 1941 Canadian quarters due to a manufacturing issue at a mint facility in San Francisco. Instead of printing new currency on blank coins during the normal process, the machine accidentally put the new design on top of these existing quarters. The error is only slightly visible though; in fact, if you’re not intentionally keeping an eye out for it and using a magnifying glass, you may miss it entirely. But if you look closely enough, you can see the year 1941 in upside-down markings above the word “DOLLAR.”
Though it may be unlikely that a high-value 1970 quarter is in your change jar, you never know. You might as well sift through it before tossing it into your purse. Don’t have this 1970 quarter? There are plenty of other rare coins floating around nowadays, like this ultra-rare nickel, these unique Wisconsin quarters, and this special 1995 silver dollar. You never know what might be lurking around until you have a second look!
Some of the 1970 quarters were printed over the 1941 Canadian quarters. This error is visible on the reverse side, where you can notice the year 1941 above the word DOLLAR when using good lighting. One collector found a unique misprinted 1970 S proof quarter and has offered it on eBay for an impressive $35,000.

The design for the 30th Statehood quarter features a cow, a round of cheese and an ear of corn. Some Wisconsin quarter errors were found with an "extra cornstalk leaf" – either pointing down ("Low Leaf") or pointing up ("High Leaf").
The more off-center the coin design is, the more valuable it is. One extremely weird 1970-D quarter combines an off-center strike with a double strike. Graded MS64 "Double Struck - Second Strike 70% Off-Center," this coin sold for $1,020 in 2021.
Several U.S. coins from the 1970s can fetch you a lot of money on the collector's market, with the priciest ones valued in five figures. As with many collectible coins, the most valuable ones from the 1970s have some error or distinctive feature that sets them apart from the crowd.

Some error quarters are even more valuable due to their rarity. For example, some 2005-P Minnesota quarters with a doubled die error can be worth up to $500. The Wisconsin state quarter has also seen its fair share of errors.
