Charlie Spring is a student at Truham Grammar School for Boys and the son of Jane Spring and Julio Spring, he's the older brother to Oliver Spring and the younger brother to Tori Spring. He is also the boyfriend of Nick Nelson.
Personality[]
Charlie is highly-strung and tends to overthink things. He is very sensitive and deals with several mental health problems. He had a habit of apologising a lot, though by the end of Heartstopper, this is shown to get better.
Nick often describes Charlie as a nerd.
Charlie loves reading (it's his favourite hobby), dogs and playing the drums. He loves Ancient Greek classical literature, and two of his favourite classics are The Illiad and Brideshead Revisited.
In Solitaire, Tori describes him as being nice, a characteristic she believes is underrated and can be taken advantage of.
Health[]
As a result of bullying, getting outed at school, and having an unhealthy relationship with Ben Hope, Charlie ends up suffering from mental illness. He reveals to Nick that, when he was younger, he dealt with self-harm issues, but that this was something of the past.
However, in later chapters of Heartstopper, Charlie's mental health issues take another turn for the worse. He ends up staying in a mental health facility for anorexia and OCD for a few months. In the unrevised edition of Solitaire, Charlie is mentioned to have attempted suicide, though neither the revised edition of Solitaire or Heartstopper explicitly state this.
Charlie later suffers a relapse, as described in Solitaire and flashbacks in Heartstopper. However, as a result of therapy and a support system, Charlie is doing a lot better.
