You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can customize depends on your device.

Turn Gmail notifications on or off
Step 1: Check your device notification settings
Important:
- To receive Gmail notifications, turn on device notifications.
- Settings can vary by phone or tablet. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
- In the top left, tap Menu Settings General settings.
- Tap Manage notifications.
- Turn All Gmail notifications on or off.
- You can also customize the types of notifications that you receive on your device.
Step 2: Check Gmail app notification settings
Important: If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, change the app notification settings for each account.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
- In the top left, tap Menu Settings.
- Select your account.
- Under “Notifications,” tap Email notifications.
- Choose the types of email notifications you want to receive.
- All new mail: Receive notifications for every email you receive.
- High priority only: Receive notifications for email that Gmail identifies as high priority.
- None: Turn off notifications for emails you receive.

- To decide which emails are important, Gmail uses several signals.Learn how Gmail determines email importance.
- If you still don’t receive notifications, check your sync settings:
- On the account settings page, scroll down to the “Data usage” section.
- Next to “Sync Gmail,” tap the box.
Change inbox notification settings
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
- In the top left, tap Menu Settings.
- Select your account.
- Under “Notifications,” tap Inbox notifications.
- Tap Sync messages None, Last 30 days, or All.
- Choose your notification settings for your inbox:
- Label notifications: Receive notifications for new emails in your inbox.
- Notify for every message: Play a sound or vibrate when each new email arrives.
Change label notification settings
Important: If you organize your email with labels, you can change your notification settings for those labels. If you don't sync messages under a label, you can't turn on notifications for that label. Learn about Gmail labels.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
- In the top left, tap Menu Settings.
- Select your account.
- Under “Notifications,'' tap Manage labels.
- In the list, select a label.
- Tap Sync messages None, Last 30 days, or All.
- Choose your notification settings for the label:
- Label notifications: Receive notifications for new emails in the label.
- Notify for every message: Play a sound or vibrate when each new email arrives.
Change notification sounds
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
- In the top left, tap Menu Settings.
- Select your account.
- Under “Notifications,'' tap Notification sounds.
- Under “Email” or "Chat and spaces," tap Notification sound Sound.
- Choose the notification sound you want to use.
- To turn off notification sounds, tap None.
Tip: On some Android phones and tablets, to save your notification sound, at the top right, tap Save.
