Change app language on your Android phone (2024)

You can change the language for an individual app in your device settings.

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 14 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Change the language setting for a specific app

Important: Apps that are set to follow the system default use the first supported language in the list.

  1. On yourdevice, open your Settings app.
  2. Tap System Change app language on your Android phone (1) LanguagesChange app language on your Android phone (2) App Languages.
  3. Select the app you want to change.
  4. Choose a language.

Tip: You can only change the language for apps that support language selection.

Troubleshoot problems with app language feature

"All languages" lists the languages that a specific app supports. To get the most up-to-date list of supported languages, update your app.

If you change the app setting, but the app language doesn't change

If you select a language but notice the app language doesn't change, try these fixes:

  • Restart the app.
  • Make sure your devicehas a network connection. If you change your app language when you’re not connected to the internet, the app language may not update.
  • Add the language as a secondary language, then try again to switch the app language:
    1. On your Android device, open your Settings app.
    2. Tap System Change app language on your Android phone (3) Languages & input Change app language on your Android phone (4) Languages.
    3. Add the language as a secondary language.
    4. After a few minutes, re-open yourSettings app.
    5. Tap System Change app language on your Android phone (5) Languages & input Change app language on your Android phone (6) App Languages.
    6. Select the app you want to change.
    7. Choose the language.

If the language feature still doesn't work, the list of supported languages provided by the app may not be accurate.

Tip: Make sure you have the latest version of the app.

If you can’t find your app in the app list

Some apps don't support this language feature. Only apps whose developers opt-in to this feature will display in the apps list.

If an app seems stuck in a language that is different from your System languages, you might be able to reset the app if youclear app data. Some apps only let you change the language from within the app or an associated app-specific account.

Set regional preferences

Important: Regional preferences settings are only available on Android 14 and up.

  1. On your device, open your Settings app.
  2. Tap System Change app language on your Android phone (7) Languages Change app language on your Android phone (8) Regional preferences.
  3. Select your regional preferences based on:
    • Temperature: Set your preferred temperature unit, like Celsius or Fahrenheit.
    • First day of week: Set your preferred first day of a week, like Sunday or Monday.
    • Number preferences: Change the numbering system for languages such as Arabic, where more than one numbering system is commonly used. This item shows up only for languages where more than one numbering system is commonly used.

Tips:

  • Your default regional preferences are based on your system and app language settings. For example, the commonly used temperature unit in English (United States) is Farenheit and the first day of the week is Sunday. In English (United Kingdom) they are Celsius and Monday, respectively.
  • You can also set your preferred weather unit across many Google services.
    1. Open the Google app.
    2. Tap on the weather chip.
    3. On the weather card, tap Menu Change app language on your Android phone (9).
    4. Select your preferred temperature unit.
