How do I use this calculator?
The basic portion of this calculator allows you to calculate any of the variables shown directly above.
Calculator Operations:
- Enter the cabinet height and cabinet depth to calculate the minimum ceiling height clearance.
- Enter the cabinet height and minimum ceiling height clearance to calculate the cabinet depth.
- Enter the cabinet depth and minimum ceiling height clearance to calculate the cabinet height.
The advanced version of this calculator allows you to calculate the installation space volume requirement based on the total installation height, depth, and width.
Use the calculate button when all known values have been entered and use the reset button when you want to clear the values from the calculator.
Enter the size of the cabinet and the depth of the cabinet into the calculator to determine the minimum ceiling height/clearance to fit the cabinet.

Ceiling Height Clearance Formula
The following equation is used to calculate the Ceiling Height Clearance.
CH = SQRT(L^2+D^2)
- Where CH is the minimum ceiling height (ft)
- L is the length/height of the cabinet/dresser (ft)
- D is the depth of the cabinet/dresser (ft)
To calculate the minimum ceiling height clearance, add the value of the height of the cabinet squared and the depth of the cabinet squared together, then take the square root of the result.
What is a Ceiling Height Clearance?
Definition:
A ceiling height clearance is defined as the minimum height a ceiling can be in order to fit a dresser/cabinet.
How to Calculate Ceiling Height Clearance?
Example Problem:
The following example outlines the steps and information needed to calculate Ceiling Height Clearance.
First, determine the length of the cabinet. In this example, the cabinet has a length of 6ft.
Next, determine the depth of the cabinet. This cabinet has a depth of 2.5ft.
Finally, calculate the ceiling height clearance using the formula above:
CH = SQRT(L^2+D^2)
CH = SQRT(6^2+2.5^2)
CH = 6.5 ft.
