Guidelines on what you are permitted to do during your Casper test

Updated over a week ago

System Requirements

The Casper test is taken online using a computer at a location of your choice. Please ensure that your set-up meets the following requirements:

  • Browser: Chrome and Firefox are the only supported browsers. We recommend having the latest versions of both browsers installed on your device. Other browsers such as Safari and Edge are not supported and often experience issues during the test and while navigating our website. You can download the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox HERE.

  • Device: You must use a computer (laptop or desktop) that uses the Windows or macOS operating systems. Other operating systems such as Linux, ChromeOS, or iOS are not supported and may experience technical issues. Smartphones and tablets (such as iPads) are also not supported devices.
Note: 2-in-1/hybrid devices such as Microsoft Surface products are acceptable, but may experience technical issues. Please see here for more information.

  • Internet speed: The Casper test has a minimum requirement of 1.5Mbps download speed and 2Mbps upload speed, but higher speeds should result in smoother performance. You can check your connection speed here or through the System Requirements Check found in the Casper section of your Acuity Insights account.

  • Webcam and microphone: Your computer will need a working webcam and microphone, and access to both is mandatory for identity assertion and proctoring purposes. Both built-in and external webcams and microphones are permitted.

During Your Test

  • You must take the test alone and without assistance from anyone else.

  • Your webcam and microphone must be active for the duration of the test. Ensure that your webcam is uncovered and your face is in full view of the webcam at all times (except for the mid-test break).

  • You must type all your responses. Speech-to-text or dictation software is not permitted unless you have been pre-approved for testing accommodations.

  • Disable any browser extensions (ex: Grammarly, ad blockers, etc.), VPNs, and firewalls, as these can interfere with the test.

  • ID: Applicants submit their government-issued ID when creating their Acuity Insights account. You do not need to provide or submit your ID again at the beginning of the test.

  • Breaks: Starting from 2023-2024 admissions cycle, there is an optional 10-minute break at the middle of the test after the 6 video response sections and an optional 5-minute break after the first 4 typed response scenarios. During those times, you do not need to be in view of the webcam. Feel free to grab some refreshments, stretch, use the restroom, etc. but be sure to return before the breaks are over to resume your test.

  • Phone and wearable devices: Please refrain from using your mobile phone for the duration of your Casper test, including during the break. If you receive notifications from your smartphone on your computer, please make sure to change these settings for your Casper test. Additionally, if you have a wearable device such as a smart-watch, please ensure you remove these prior to commencing your test.

Materials

  • Face mask: We recommend taking the Casper test in a safe location where you are not required to wear a face mask due to Covid-19 regulations, but if you are required to wear a face mask, then please do so. However, please keep in mind that you will have to temporarily lower your mask to take a photo of your face at the beginning and middle of the test for identity verification and proctoring purposes. Please only do this if it is safe. If you are unable to temporarily lower your mask, please contact the Acuity Insights Team and we will work to find other arrangements for you.

  • Food/drink: You may drink and eat during your Casper test. However, we encourage you to focus on your test and spend the majority of your time typing your responses and paying attention to scenarios.

  • Headphones: Applicants are permitted to use headphones/earbuds to assist with listening to the videos or blocking out distractions. If you choose to use headphones, we recommend that you use standard corded/wired headphones, as some applicants have reported audio issues with wireless/Bluetooth headphones. If you choose to use wireless headphones, please test them with the Sample Test (available in the Casper section of your Acuity Insights account) to make sure they function properly and ensure that they are fully charged before you take your test.

  • Keyboards: If you’re using a laptop for your Casper test, you may connect a separate keyboard to use if you prefer. If you choose to use a wireless keyboard, please test it with the Sample Test (available in the Casper section of your Acuity Insights account) to make sure it functions properly and ensure that it is fully charged before you take your test.

  • Monitors: You may use a second monitor for your test, but please ensure that your face is in full view of the webcam for the duration of your Casper test. We understand that if you are using a second monitor, you may not be looking straight at the webcam as you work on your test, but please have it directed towards your face as much as possible. If our proctoring and security measures are unable to identify you, your test may be paused and you will be asked to make the necessary adjustments prior to resuming your test.

  • Note taking: You are permitted to use a blank piece of paper, a pen/pencil, and a hardcopy dictionary during your test. You do not need to show your blank piece of paper to the webcam prior to the test. You are not allowed to have pre-written notes. Translation and language or grammar apps/websites are not permitted as they can affect the content of the test.
