Capital One Venture Review
5.0 / 5
The Capital One Venture Card is a very good travel rewards credit card for people with a good credit score who don't want to be tied down to a single travel provider. With an initial bonus worth $750 in travel, double miles on all purchases and a reasonable annual fee, it’s clear why the Venture Card is so popular.
One of the keys to the Capital One Venture Card’s success is the fact that you can use Venture miles to pay for any travel-related charges once they post to your account. This policy is great for people who like to shop around for the best deals on travel comparison sites. It also gives you a lot of booking freedom relative to most travel rewards cards.
You can learn more about the Venture Card’s unique benefits below.
Capital One Venture Card Review Highlights
Initial bonus worth $750
The Capital One Venture card offers 75,000 miles for spending at least $4,000 within 3 months of account opening. That is worth $750 when redeemed for any travel-related purchase that appears on your statement.
Up to 2% back on all purchases
The Capital One Venture Card gives you 2 miles / $1 spent on most purchases, which equates to 2% cash back when you redeem for travel. Miles are worth less when redeemed for anything else.Plus, hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel yield 5 miles / $1 spent.
No foreign fee
None of Capital One’s credit cards charge foreign-transaction fees. And it is one of only two major issuers to take that step. This will save you 1.57%on all purchases processed outside the U.S., whether you’re traveling or simply buying something from an international merchant.
Reasonable annual fee
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card's$95 annual fee might scare some applicants off, but it’s a bargain when you consider the card’s rewards. The initial bonus alone covers more than seven years of annual fees.
Travel-booking flexibility
Unlike many other rewards cards, the Venture Credit Card doesn’t force you to book rewards travel through Capital One. Instead, you can book wherever you want and then simply use your miles to pay for the purchase when it appears on your statement.
Generous ‘travel’ definition
The fact that Venture rewards are worth less if you don’t redeem for travel could be a major drawback, depending on how “travel” is defined. Fortunately, Venture views the term pretty broadly. You’ll get full value for your miles by redeeming them for any of the following types of travel expenses:
- Airfare
- Hotel reservations
- Cruise reservations
- Train tickets
- Taxi, bus or limo fare
- Travel agent fees
- Time shares
Travel Insurance
Capital One Venture currently offers lost or damaged luggage reimbursem*nt and rental car insurance. If you charge your transportation, lodging, and other travel expenses to the card, these types of insurance may protect you from having to pay for lost or damaged bags, damage to a rental car, or theft of a rental car. Just remember: Benefits are available to accounts approved for the World Elite Mastercard product, subject to terms, conditions, and exclusions in the World Elite Mastercard Guide to Benefits. See account terms or application terms for more details. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply. For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the benefits may be provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.
Built to be paid in full
Like most rewards cards, Capital One Venture sports a rather high APR. In fact, you’re likely to receive an above-average rate for your credit standing. So it’s best not to carry a balance from month to month with this particular plastic.
It’s fair to say that the Capital One Venture Card is an elite option for anyone with even a bit of travel on their itinerary. You just need to make sure you have the good or excellent credit needed to qualify. You can check your latest credit score for free on WalletHub to find out.

The absolute worst. Stay away! Had two fraudulent charges, they investigated for one day and told me that I, or another card member, benefited from the transactions. I had no other cardholder, they could not produce the business name, said it was an auto store purchase in Cabo, couldn't even provide a phone number, or a signed receipt. Refused to refund the under $500.00 bogus charges. The absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. There are far better cards that don't allow fraud and would notify you of a questionable purchase.

The only two things this car is good for are the no foreign transaction fee, which many other cards offer, and mileage for travel; yet, even its mileage program is costly. Aside from that, it is a terrible card, with even supervisors providing misleading information. Capital One is even unwilling to back up customers on disputes and makes unrealistic demands for documents. I'm going back to using my TJ Maxx Mastercard and my Amex, especially Amex, which has always stood by me and provided me with outstanding customer service for over 15 years.

They don't care about their customers at all! We called to let them know we were traveling out of the country. They froze our card anyway. When we called, they said they would need to review the purchases to make sure they were legitimate and it would take 5-7 days. They literally left us stranded in a foreign country with no credit card. Additionally, we had an issue with a charge we tried to dispute, and they were no help at all! Extremely disappointed in this card.

Used points for a hotel stay and STILL GOT BILLED AT THE HOTEL. Essentially paid twice. Spent over 4 hours on 4 phone calls with NINE different useless overseas service reps before finally getting a supervisor who refunded the points in less than 5 minutes. The incompetence was unbelievable and every phone call was like starting from the beginning. They can read a script, pass the buck and lie but don't expect any actual help until you start screaming. What good are travel points you can't use? I cashed out all my points for gift cards and got a different credit card.

Poor customer service, communication, and very inflexible. Approved for their Flagship Venture card, then, after the fact, I was told that a state driver's license was mandatory. I don't drive and have no need for a driver's license. I explained that in Hawaii (my home), it takes a minimum of 6 months just to get the initial appointment for a DL, and by the time one receives the license, the better part of a year is gone. I offered a multitude of other ID options, birth certificates, deed of legal property ownership, etc., only to be told no DL, no card. I said, "but you already ran my credit, opened the account in my name, established a credit line, but you refuse to send the card to me without me showing you a driver's license." It was totally insane, and the lady could not have cared less. She refused my request to speak with a manager and asked me, "What do you want to do?" Rude, obnoxious, and downright mean! Now I will have a credit pull, and open account, then a closed account all because of a refusal to be flexible. Stay away from Capital One. They are very bad for business.

Absolute worst card I've ever had! I have excellent credit and have maintained that for most of my life, and I am now 63. They said I signed up for paperless bills, which I absolutely did not do! I read everything carefully, and they charged me a $25 late fee because I did not see the bill in my email. When I saw it, I called immediately, but they would not remove the fee, so of course, I canceled the card. Very rude, unprofessional! I have another travel card and Discover, which treat you like gold.
