Synopsis
The Australian design platform was founded by Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams in 2013.
Every success story begins with a spate of rejections. And, when it comes to successful unicorns, the story is no different. Every successful business has undergone the rigours of time and numerous rejections before it culminated in an inspiring success story.
All the illustrious ideas that have blossomed into successful ventures have faced rejections, and the Australian design platform, Canva, has an interesting account of successive dismissals.
Entrepreneur and Harvard Board Advisor, Martin Roll, took to LinkedIn to share the inspiring journey of Melanie Perkins who founded Canva in 2013. Roll began his post by stating that the Canva founder, Melanie Perkins, was rejected hundred times.
As of today, Canva has become the most accessed online design tool that is used for creating resumes, presentations, posters, invites, and certificates. According to Roll, the journey towards global acceptance of the brand was not an easy one.

Perkins came up with the idea for Canva in 2007 when she was just 19. She was teaching design programmes to her peers in university when she realised that most of the programmes were expensive, complex, and inaccessible. She conceptualised a future of design which would be simple, virtual, and collaborative.
Perkins started by raising venture capital, however, the process was even more difficult. She found her first investors after over a hundred rejections and numerous futile trips to Silicon Valley. It took over three years for Perkins and her husband and co-founder Cliff Obrecht to acquire the first investment for the company. Canva was finally launched in 2013.
From No To Yes
Her faith in making design accessible to all kept her motivated and moving forward. According to Roll, every ‘no’ to Perkins propelled her closer to the next client who would eventually say ‘yes’. Perkins also believes in the act of giving, she decided to give a 30 per cent stake in the business to a charity that works towards eliminating poverty. A 30 per cent of the company stake would amount to a whopping USD 12 billion donations according to Roll.
Canva is one of the few unicorn start-ups that are profitable. According to Roll, Canva has raised USD 560 million in investments and is currently at a USD 40 billion valuation. “Very few companies in this day and age represent strong moral values, and Canva is one of them, thanks to Melanie’s vision,” wrote Roll.

On Gender Disparity
Roll, in his post, went on to say that the tech industry was synonymous with gender disparity. However, Perkins has consistently made efforts to eliminate this. He said that Perkins ensured that she eliminated bias in hiring decisions at Canva. The company currently has 41 per cent female representation which is higher than the 28 per cent industry average.
Canva has reportedly helped in creating 3.5 billion designs across 190 countries with over 60 million active users. “Melanie Perkins’ entrepreneurship journey is truly inspiring. Be bold. Be daring. Be different!” Roll signed off his post.
