Ingredients Needed

Buffalo Chicken Baked Ziti - Recipe Diaries (2)
  • Ziti pasta - This recipe calls for ziti noodles but any type of pasta shape will work.
  • Lightbutter - I use light butter to help reduce the calories and points.
  • All-purpose flour is a type of wheat flour that is commonly used in cooking and baking. It is versatile and can be used for a variety of recipes, including bread, cakes, cookies, and pastries.Low-fatmilk
  • Cream cheese,room temperature
  • Franks Original Buffalo Wing Sauce - This is a must and is the main ingredient in buffalo chicken dip!
  • Ranch seasoning- I like to use the dry ranch seasoning and have not tested this recipe yet using ranch dressing. So, I don’t really know if that will work or not.
  • Chicken - Any kind of chicken will work for this. When I make a serving of buffalo chicken dip for myself, I will use canned. Cook some chicken in a crockpot or Instant pot and shred it. Just make sure it’s cooked, or else the dish will take longer to make.
  • Chivesfor garnish
  • Colby jackcheese - Adds more spice with the buffalo sauce.
  • See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make this casserole ahead of time?

Yes, you can make this dish ahead of time. Once you have all the ingredients in the casserole dish let it cool off and place saran wrap over the dish. When ready to bake take it out of the fridge and sprinkle the cheese on top. Then bake it in the oven.

How is this a WW recipe?

On WW there is no food off-limits and everything is on the table. That is why I love this program so much. So, Let’s stop telling ourselves that we can’t eat certain foods. That’s not true. We can eat them, but sometimes we choose not to eat them.

FAQs

Should you bake ziti covered or uncovered? ›

Should I cover Baked Ziti while it's baking? Yes. Cover loosely with foil so it doesn't stick to the cheese, then bake for 20 minutes. Then remove the foil so the cheese can go bubbly and golden!

How do you keep baked ziti moist? ›

Layer half the mozzarella into the pasta and reserve half for the top. It bakes up golden-brown — the hallmark of a good pasta casserole. Make sure there is enough sauce to use as a layer at the top, under the mozzarella. This will insulate the pasta and keep it from drying out.

How do you reheat baked ziti? ›

Place the portion on a microwave safe dish. Cover the dish with a wet paper towel, then microwave in 30 second increments until the baked ziti is bubbling and hot.

How long is baked ziti good for in the fridge? ›

If you are storing it in the dish it was baked in, be sure to cover to top tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. You can also transfer it to an airtight container. Baked ziti will last in the fridge for about 4-5 days.

Should you undercook ziti before baking? ›

(You want to undercook the pasta slightly, as it will continue to cook in the oven. A good way to do this is cook it 2 minutes less than you normally would if preparing it al dente.) Reserving 1 cup of the pasta cooking liquid, drain pasta and rinse with cool water; set aside while the tomato sauce finishes cooking.

How long to let ziti sit after baking? ›

Spoon half of the remaining sauce over the top, then top with half of the remaining mozzarella cheese. Repeat with another layer of the coated pasta, sauce, and mozzarella. Bake until bubbling, about 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Does baked ziti contain ricotta cheese? ›

Add half the pasta to the baking dish, top with dollops of the ricotta, the remaining spinach, and scoop the remaining pasta on top. Top with the mozzarella and pecorino cheese. Drizzle with olive oil and bake until the cheese is browned, 16 to 22 minutes.

Why is my baked ziti so watery? ›

Oftentimes, baked ziti can end up watery if the tomato sauce isn't thick enough. Luckily this recipe calls for the tomato sauce to simmer on the stove along with the ground beef and onion. Doing this will help to get rid of some of the extra water in the sauce.

What is a substitute for ricotta cheese in baked ziti? ›

Cottage cheese: As far as ricotta substitutes go, light and mild cottage cheese is your best bet. In fact, some people prefer to use cottage cheese because it has a similar flavor and fewer calories.

How to spice up leftover baked ziti? ›

Put a little pasta sauce on top of each portion. You can also add a little extra cheese at this step. Cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil. Serve the leftover baked ziti with extra sauce and grated parmesan cheese on the side.

How do you reheat baked ziti without drying it out? ›

For oven reheating, one should preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). The baked ziti should be placed in an oven-safe dish, lightly covered with foil to keep it moist. If the ziti appears dry, adding a bit of marinara sauce can help retain its moisture.

Should you freeze baked ziti before or after baking? ›

If baking right away: Transfer to the oven and cook until the sauce is bubbling and the cheese is melted and slightly browned in places, 25 to 30 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. If freezing: Let the dish cool completely, then cover with a double layer of foil to prevent freezer burn.

Can I eat week old baked ziti? ›

Mayo Clinic says 4 days is the limit for refrigerated.

Is it safe to eat baked ziti left out overnight? ›

It's not recommended to eat pasta that's been left out at room temperature for more than two hours. Bacteria can grow rapidly at temperatures between 40°F and 140°F (4°C to 60°C), potentially causing foodborne illness.

Can I eat 5 day old pasta bake? ›

A pasta bake or chicken stir-fry dinner can make a great next-day lunch, but how long does it take for leftovers to become unsafe to eat? As a general rule, food should be eaten within two to three days of cooking.

Should you cook pasta covered or uncovered? ›

It's okay to put a lid on the pot while you are waiting for the water to boil. However, after it starts to boil and you add the pasta to the water, you should remove the lid to prevent the water from bubbling over.

Do you cook baked ziti covered or uncovered reddit? ›

I boil my pasta to just under a minute of “al dente” and then after my layering it typically bake it uncovered because I want the crusty cheese on top.

Should I bake my lasagna covered or uncovered? ›

If uncovered, the prolonged exposure to heat will quickly dry out your lasagna, no matter how much sauce you've added. Make sure to always add a layer of tin foil over your baking dish, which will trap the moisture inside while still allowing the dish to cook properly.
