Wealth, influence and corruption collide in this drama set in New York. Shrewd U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades is embroiled in a high-stakes game of predator vs. prey with Bobby Axelrod, an ambitious hedge-fund king. To date, Rhoades has never lost an insider trading case -- he's 81-0 -- but when criminal evidence turns up against Axelrod, he proceeds cautiously in building the case against Axelrod, who employs Rhoades' wife, psychiatrist Wendy, as a performance coach for his company. Wendy, who has been in her position longer than Chuck has been in his, refuses to give up her career for her husband's legal crusade against Axelrod. Both men use their intelligence, power and influence to outmaneuver the other in this battle over billions. The high-profile cast is led by Emmy winner Paul Giamatti ("John Adams") as Chuck Rhoades.

Critics Consensus

Despite a lack of likable characters, Billions' soapy melodrama and larger-than-life canvas offer plenty of repeat viewing potential.

Billions: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Kelly Lawler USA Today Darkly comedic and full of delicious twists and turns, the series is a juicy melodrama that delights in poking fun at the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Nov 10, 2021 Full Review Billions: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Eric Deggans NPR "Billions" excels most at painting a compelling portrait of how powerful men - and the women behind them - move the world. And the idea that many of their decisions center on such small human details is both a compelling and a frightening notion. Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Billions: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Brian Tallerico New York Magazine/Vulture Though it's more soap opera than insightful Wall Street commentary, Billions can be a promising roller-coaster of cutthroat egos if you approach it with the right attitude. Rated: 4/5 May 8, 2018 Full Review Billions: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Ángel S. Harguindey El Pais (Spain) Extraordinary cast, extraordinary writing lead to a successful series. [Full Review in Spanish] Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Billions: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Scott Meslow The Week But while the series, like its protagonists, has all the trappings of greatness, it never goes deep enough to justify how impressed it is with itself. Aug 28, 2017 Full Review Billions: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Bernice Harrison Irish Times It's a compelling, high-octane power-and-privilege romp -- essentially Gordon Gecko updated. Alice M This show is BAD. I do not understand the positive reviews. The dialogue is amazingly awful, which might be okay if it was a bit tongue in cheek, but it's just cringe. Like whole scenes of two characters speaking in parallel allegories, which could be funny, except we're meant to take it seriously? And really uninspired sexual innuendo and insults, which you kind of feel the show is getting off on (it's certainly no Succession). No genuine psychological insight, 'cause psychiatry's a magic fix apparently, and even more because there's nothing at all real about any of these characters - they have the psychological depth of the kind of 'adult' character I would have conceived of as a teenager; ludicrous coincidences; a dizzying array of characters; whole storylines set up that are very easily resolved and disposed of, leaving you questioning what the point was. So many terrible lines, but one sticking with me right now involves the DA saying to his psychiatrist wife - who is, naturally, working for his nemesis - 'You're talented and you're beautiful. I'm sure you'll land on your feet.' Lol like what a bizarre credential beauty is for a psychiatrist. A stupid show that thinks it's smart. Suits but more intelligence Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Gerry S Tremenda serie, personajes divertidos y contrastantes. Una muestra del poder detrás del dinero y el mercado bursatil. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/24 Full Review Simon L Pure American cornball sentiment, bullsh*t philosophy and unbelievable characters. Especially the "artist'! What a miscasting! Looks like a high school wrestling coach. And how deep is the bullsh*t with Wendy!! She observes, she diagnoses, she immediately fixes. Investor conflicts? Ask Wendy? Artist's block? Ask Wendy. Want more gobbledygook? Ask Wendy. Only Americans could fall for this mix of obscene greed and cheesy nostalgic "Yonkers born-and-bred" local boy gives back rubbish. Main actor is English. A shame the whole production isn't. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Some Guy F Every character in this show that has more than two lines of dialogue is essentially the same person. The writers do not know how to write anything except a pompous person who thinks they're the greatest and has to constantly prove it and make tons of references to show how clever they are. If it was just one character, it would work, especially if it was Paul Giamatti as he pulls off that insufferable type of person very well. The problem is you have every single character doing this stuff, including Dan Soder who is a stoner comedian, he's not a pompous windbag.
