Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the gaming industry's most famous mascots and the character and franchise's immense popularity has even extended into successful live-action feature films. 10 Shadow Is The Creation Of Genetic Experiments
Shadow the Hedgehog's obvious resemblance to Sonic might lead some to believe that the character is an evil clone of Sega's fast-paced mascot. Shadow is the result of genetic experimentation, but he's got nothing to do with Sonic and their resemblance is merely coincidental.
Shadow the Hedgehog is Dr. Gerald Robotnik's crowning achievement and the result of his volatile alliance with an alien lifeform called Black Doom. Gerald creates Shadow from Black Doom's blood and his role as the "Ultimate Life Form" was defined by Chaos Emerald collection. Sonic is certainly an unconventional hedgehog, but he's completely natural compared to this foreboding science experiment.
9 Shadow Uses Guns
Sonic the Hedgehog’s strongest weapon is ultimately his speed. There are occasions where different environments force Sonic to adopt weapons, but he’s at his best when he can just attack enemies through speedy homing attacks. Shadow has these same skills, but he’s also become skilled with powerful firearms.
Shadow the Hedgehog introduces submachine guns and heavy artillery into Shadow’s repertoire, completely divorcing him from Sonic's experiences. These violent weapons reflect Shadow’s comparatively mature tone. Shadow is also prone to driving motorcycles and vehicles but for destruction rather than transportation.
8 Shadow Is Much Older Than Sonic
It's hard to tell how much time has passed in Sonic's canonical timeline. There's a moving timeline that connects the games but Sonic and his friends and foes never really age. At first glance, fans might assume Sonic and Shadow are roughly the same nebulous age.
However, Shadow's timeline is more specific. He was created 50 years ago by Dr. Gerald Robotnik, Eggman's grandfather. Shadow has more experience with Eggman's ancestors. He's much older than Sonic and essentially a lost relic from an older era.

7 Shadow Has Suffered From Amnesia
An identity is an important thing and Shadow begins his video game journey suffering from amnesia, with no recollection of his past or identity beyond his name and Maria Robotnik. So much of Shadow's story is about learning the truth about his past and where his purpose lies, rather than being manipulated as a weapon.
Sonic has experienced his share of extreme transformations, including a stint as a "Werehog." However, he's never had amnesia or doubted who he is.
6 Shadow Is Technically Immortal
Sonic’s speed allows him to accomplish unimaginable things and he can usually run his way out of any given situation. That said, Sonic is hardly invincible and he can be defeated by anything from spike-filled pits to drowning underwater.
Shadow’s origins as a genetic experiment equip him with extreme endurance that proves that his “Ultimate Life Form” label isn’t an exaggeration. Shadow the Hedgehog establishes that Shadow is not only bulletproof but that his body also doesn’t age or take fatal damage. It takes Shadow a long time to come to terms with his artificial roots, but his immortality helps make up for at least some of his angst and trauma.
5 Shadow Can Warp Time & Space Through The Chaos Emeralds
The Sonic the Hedgehog series goes to some epic places and time travel has been a mechanic and pivotal plot point ever since Sonic CD. Sonic goes all in on this concept with both Shadow and Silver the Hedgehog, the latter of which travels through time and Shadow can drastically warp time and space.
Chaos Control becomes Shadow's calling card throughout Sonic Adventure 2, but Sonic also briefly uses this warp ability in tandem with Shadow. However, Shadow has many more Chaos Emerald-based attacks at his disposal, such as Chaos Blast and Chaos Spear, which can effectively wipe out swarms of enemies at once. The Chaos Emeralds are much more fundamental to Shadow's identity than Sonic's.

4 Shadow Has Hero & Dark Forms
Shadow the Hedgehog is a polarizing entry in the Sonic franchise, but it deserves respect for many of its ambitious decisions, like the incorporation of non-linear gameplay with a multitude of branching story paths. The canonical ending in Shadow the Hedgehog involves Shadow becoming Super Shadow through the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic also has a Super form but Shadow is more flexible than his speedy pseudo-sibling.
Shadow the Hedgehog's ability to push Shadow down a heroic or dark path can also result in Hero Shadow or Dark Shadow. These transformations are treated like imperfect variations of Super Shadow that are the result of pure justice or immense evil taking up residence in Shadow's soul. They're also wholly unique to Shadow.
3 Shadow’s Sweet Relationship With Maria Robotnik
Romance and emotional relationships haven't ever been Sonic the Hedgehog's priority, which makes it jarring whenever this storytelling genre finds its way into a game. Sonic's greatest "relationships" are with Amy Rose or Princess Elise the Third from the regrettable Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 game.
Shadow has no interest in these individuals but he is driven by his need to avenge Maria Robotnik. Maria, Gerald Robotnik's granddaughter, was Shadow's only real friend during his time on Space Colony ARK. Maria is tragically a fallen figure from the past, but her memory inspires Shadow in everything he does.

2 Shadow Works As A G.U.N. Agent
The original Sonic the Hedgehog features lush, natural environments. However, dark, industrial stages slowly invade the franchise. In his stories, the Guardian Units of Nations, otherwise known as G.U.N., is a government organization that's responsible for the Earth's protection.
Shadow offers his services to G.U.N. as a loyal agent, which is somewhat surprising since they're also largely responsible for his greatest tragedies. Shadow's stories frequently involve G.U.N., whereas Sonic is a free agent. Sonic is sometimes prone to manipulation, but to his credit, he’s unlikely to align himself with a mysterious company that he hasn’t thoroughly vetted.
1 Shadow’s Full Power Is Restrained By Inhibitor Rings
The four Inhibitor Rings around Shadow's arms and legs are an easily overlooked part of his design. They're a safety precaution created by Gerald Robotnik to restrain and harness Shadow's intense power. Sonic the Hedgehog from '06 details what happens when Shadow's Inhibitor Rings are removed.
Without his Inhibitor Rings, Shadow can accomplish impossible tasks, easily destroying hundreds of enemies at once, but it leaves him completely drained. Sonic's inherent freedom means that he's never been exposed to Inhibitor Rings and never needed to learn how to channel his strength like his dark counterpart.
