Biblical Finance Principles : 5 Foundational Laws of Wealth (2024)

Deuteronomy 8:18 tells us that God gives us the power to get wealth. This doesn’t mean that He drops money onto our laps. We must do our part to grow in financial knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, too. When we apply ourselves to Biblical finance principles, God provides favor and increase.

So, since we have the power to get wealth, don’t you want to figure out how to access it? When you are beginning your wealth building journey, it is important to understand how God uses 5 foundational laws of wealth, which I outlined in this blog. They are:

• The Law of Wisdom
• The Law of Stewardship
• The Law of Connection
• The Law of Change
• The Law of Risk

1. The Law of Wisdom

King Solomon of Israel could have asked God for anything – riches, fame, or an enlarged territory. Instead, he asked for wisdom. In 1 Kings 3:5, God appeared to Solomon in a dream saying, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’” Here’s how Solomon responded in verse nine. (NIV) : “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” In 1 Kings 4:29 (NIV), “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.”

So what makes wisdom so important that a king would make it his only request to God? Biblical wisdom can be defined using the Hebrew word chokmâh which means the ability to judge correctly and follow the best course of action. When we think about God’s laws of wealth, wisdom is a form of knowledge and understanding that helps us experience financial freedom. When we align with God, He can provide us with supernatural wisdom. However, we cannot neglect the practical wisdom that comes from learning and growing through experience.

2. The Law of Stewardship

If you won a million dollars, what would you do with that money? Do you have a bucket list of items you would consider buying? Would you create a budget before spending anything? Stewardship calls for us to examine our relationship with money. A good steward knows how to manage their money well. They apply a level of intentionality to their finances because they want to glorify God by multiplying everything that’s been entrusted to them.

This law of wealth reminds us about the importance of managing our money. When you make good financial decisions, you will see beneficial results. Since most of us are not winning the lottery, the key to the law of stewardship is patience. Wealth building does not happen overnight. But, when you can manage your finances well in every step of your wealth building journey, God will bless you with the ability to move forward.

3. The Law of Connection

If you want to build wealth, you cannot do it alone. One of the Biblical finance principles that has changed my life is the law of connection. For decades, my wife Becky and I have spent our mornings praying for divine connections. This law of wealth is all about God placing the right people in our path at the right time. These divine connections and experiences are known as Kairos moments.

There is a good chance that God will use a divine connection to provide the resources you need to build wealth for the Kingdom. The law of connection is a Biblical finance principle that reminds us we all need people to help move us to move forward on our wealth building journey. The key is to remain open to the possibilities of what God can do through the connections in your life.

4. The Law of Change

Change is not always easy, but it is necessary. At some point in your wealth building journey, you will have to embrace it. Our capacity for change directly affects our willingness to accept the new things God wants us to do in our lives. The first step is to surrender to God’s will and, in doing so, understand that change is an integral part of growth.

This has a profound effect on our finances. For example, to move from the First X of your wealth building journey (the point when you are trying to earn more income than you spend), you may need to change your spending habits. In any stage of your wealth building journey, you can ask God to help you change your mindset and habits so that you can experience His divine plans for your finances.

5. The Law of Risk

Have you ever heard the saying, low risk, low reward? Every investment presents the risk of losing money. A wealth builder knows when a risk is worth a potential payout. There are few guarantees on this wealth building journey, especially if you are in the Second X (the point when your passive income exceeds your expenses.) The reality is that you will have to make some tough financial decisions.

The law of risk is a Biblical finance principle that encourages us to partner with the God of the impossible. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (NKJV) When we put our faith in the God of abundance who can exceed our expectations, we can embrace all of the risks we may be faced with on our wealth building journey.
