For those looking to earn decent travel rewards without paying an exorbitant annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card may be the right fit.
Why We Like It
The Sapphire Preferred offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance, primary auto rental collision damage waiver, purchase protection, extended warranty protection, baggage delay insurance and trip delay reimbursem*nt among other benefits.
Cardholders can redeem points for one cent each as statement credits or deposits into their bank accounts. Points are worth 25% more toward travel when redeemed through Chase Travel℠—plus, you’ll get up to $50 in statement credits each year to use toward hotels booked through Chase Travel. Another potentially valuable redemption option is to transfer your Ultimate Rewards® points to one of Chase’s many airline and hotel travel transfer partners.
What We Don’t Like
Approval for the Sapphire Preferred typically requires good or excellent credit, which means some applicants won’t be eligible for the card.
Who It’s Best For
This card bridges the gap between no annual fee travel cards and expensive premium cards, making it perfect for middle-of-the-road travelers.

If you’re looking for lofty perks without a lofty annual fee (rates & fees), the Venture X fits the bill. While other cards with elite benefits run nearly $700 a year, you’ll only pay a little more than half that for the Venture X. And you’ll still get Capital One and Priority Pass airport lounge access for you and your guests, an annual travel credit and solid earnings on everyday purchases.
Pros & Cons

- Annual travel credit through Capital One Travel and anniversary miles alone could justify the annual fee
- Miles are easy to earn and easy to use
- Lack of domestic airline and upscale hotel travel partners
- Capital One lounge network in its infancy
- Lack of hotel status benefits

Wyndham Rewards can be an overlooked program. But thanks to its simplicity, travelers can find great value. The Wyndham Rewards Earner® Plus Card* from Barclays locks in automatic Platinum elite status while earning hotel points on every purchase.
Why We Like It
The high earning rate on gas purchases makes this card an unexpected standout, but the benefits aren’t bad. Cardholders can access discounts on both paid and reward reservations—a rarity among hotel credit cards.
Additionally, you’ll earn a 7,500-point anniversary bonus each year you renew the card, which can help you get closer to your next free night. The card charges no foreign transaction fees, so it’s a strategic payment method even when traveling internationally.
What We Don’t Like
Wyndham is one of the few remaining hotel loyalty programs with strict points expiration policies, so you’ll want to avoid hoarding points for too long.

The United and partner-related benefits on the United Quest℠ Card are stellar for an airline card, and the earning rates are solid, too.
Why We Like It
The United Quest℠ Card offers a planeload in value despite its oversized-baggage of an annual fee. You can get two free checked bags when flying United and you won’t pay foreign transaction fees when traveling abroad. You can also receive up to $125 in statement credits for United purchases and, starting with your first card anniversary, can get up to two 5,000-mile credits annually after booking United award flights.
In addition to the headlining benefits, you’ll also enjoy a path toward earning status by earning Premier Qualifying Points when reaching spending thresholds on the card.
What We Don’t Like
Oddly, this card doesn’t include any United Club lounge passes, even though the less expensive United℠ Explorer Card does.
Who It’s Best For
United flyers should all consider a co-branded United Airlines card. This one, in particular, is best for travelers who don’t need airport lounge access.

Most purchases earn at a flat rate of 1.5 points per dollar spent for simplicity—with a few bonus categories for good measure. That’s a bit extra compared to standard 1% cash-back cards, so your earnings can grow more quickly.
The card also packs in a few travel benefits in amounts and features that nearly anyone can use. Cardholders can earn up to $100 in statement credits each year when using their card to pay for airline incidentals (such as seat selection fees, lounges or checked bags). You can also earn a statement credit every four years to help offset application fees for TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry. Plus, there are no foreign transaction fees.
One more reason to love the card: Bank of America Preferred Rewards members are eligible for bonus earnings on top of the everyday rewards rates.
What We Don’t Like
Unfortunately, these benefits come at a price. There’s a $95 annual fee. There’s also no introductory APR offers for new purchases or balance transfers.
Who It’s Best For
You’ll do best with the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card if you qualify for Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program for bonus points and can use the airline incidentals credit every year.

Our Expert Take
The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is a one-card solution with no annual fee that offers benefits beyond those of most cash-back Visa credit cards.
Why We Like It
This card had us at 1.5% cash back on all purchases and then outdid itself by also tacking on stronger earning rates on dining, drugstores and select travel. As if that’s not enough, the Freedom Unlimited also showers new cardholders with a welcome offer and introductory APR: 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% – 29.24% applies. An intro transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies in the first 60 days of account opening. After that, a fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer applies.
The combination of all these features makes it a great solution for anyone who doesn’t want to worry about managing multiple cards. And since there’s no annual fee, you can keep using it for years instead of constantly shopping for new options.
For anyone who’s willing to carry more than one credit card, the Freedom Unlimited pairs well with other Chase Ultimate Rewards® cards (including several on this list). When paired, cardholders may have access to additional forms of reward redemptions such as 1:1 mileage transfers to partner airlines and hotels.
What We Don’t Like
You could potentially outearn this card by choosing a 2% cash-back card, though that might mean giving up other features like the welcome bonus.
Who It’s Best For
We recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited® for anyone who wants to earn cash back without an annual fee.

The secret advantage of the Chase Freedom Unlimited is that it earns rewards that can be moved to other Chase credit cards instead of being redeemed for cash back. That means when you pair it with one of Chase’s cards that can transfer points to the bank’s airline and hotel partners, you’re effectively earning rewards that are even more valuable than advertised.

- No minimum redemption amount
- Introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers
- Foreign transaction fee

Our Expert Take
If you need time to pay down purchases or balance transfers without accruing interest, the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card could cover your needs with time to spare.
Why We Like It
The introductory period on this card is phenomenal, offering a 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers. A 18.24%, 24.74%, or 29.99% variable APR applies thereafter. Balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro APR and a balance transfer fee of 5%, min $5 applies. However, after that timeline is up, the Wells Fargo Reflect doesn’t provide much to keep you hooked on their card. You do have cellphone protection (a $25 deductible applies) when you pay your monthly phone bill with your card.
What We Don’t Like
There are no rewards, and the benefits are light. Cardholders also won’t get a welcome offer from this card. So if you don’t actually need an intro APR on new purchases, you’d be better off charging them to a card with a cash or points bonus.
Who It’s Best For
We recommend the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card to anyone who needs time to pay down purchases or balances.

You’ll find one of the longest introductory APR periods available with the U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card*, making it a great option for anyone who needs wiggle room to pay off a purchase.
Why We Like It
New cardholders get a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 21 billing cycles, followed by a variable APR of 18.74% – 29.74%. Balance transfers made within 60 days qualify for the intro APR and a balance transfer fee of 5% or $5, whichever is greater, applies.
The card also provides cellphone protection, subject to terms and conditions. But mainly this is a card you get and use for the introductory APR—and that’s it. To be fair, that’s not a bad deal for a card with a $0 annual fee.
What We Don’t Like
This is a one-trick pony, which means you’ll either love or hate this card. It doesn’t offer any rewards, and meaningful benefits are sparse.
Who It’s Best For
The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card* is best for customers who need an extended runway to pay off new purchases or balance transfers.

The introductory APR period on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card is shorter than others on the list, but it provides payment flexibility while simultaneously earning rewards.
Why We Like It
You’ll have more than a year to pay things off without interest. Cardholders get a 0% introductory APR for 15 billing cycles for purchases and balance transfers, 19.24% – 29.24% variable APR applies thereafter. Intro rate applies for any balance transfers made in the first 60 days; balance transfer fee of 3% applies to each transfer during this period, then 4%.
The combination of no annual fee, a welcome bonus, introductory APR and ongoing rewards make this card a shining star.
What We Don’t Like
Watch the limits on your earning rates. You’re capped at $2,500 in combined 2% and 3% purchases per quarter. The rewards rate drops to just 1% after that.
Who It’s Best For

Combine up to 5% cash back with more than a year without interest on purchases and balance transfers with the U.S. Bank Cash+®Visa Signature®Card.
Why We Like It
The cash-back rewards on this card are superb, assuming you’re not bothered by the spending limit on the 5% categories, which is capped at $2,000 per quarter. That still adds up on eligible categories which include everyday expenses like fast food, department stores and electronic stores.
The introductory APR offer is a fantastic feature, too. You’ll get a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 billing cycles, then a standard APR of 19.49% – 29.74% variable APR applies. A balance transfer fee of 3% ($5 minimum) applies and balances transferred must be completed within 60 days from account opening.
What We Don’t Like
To earn elevated rewards, you’ll need to manually select your preferred purchase categories, which feels like an extra step for no good reason. Worst of all, you need to re-enroll every quarter.
Who It’s Best For
Customers who can keep good track of their enrollment status and spending balances can earn excellent rewards from this card.
Pros & Cons

- 2% cash back in different eligible categories
- Welcome bonus
- 0% intro on purchases for 15 billing cycles

Our Expert Take
There’s nothing fancy about the U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Secured Visa® Card* but that’s not the point: Work on building your credit without an annual fee and you’ll have the chance to graduate to an unsecured card in the future.
Why We Like It
You can earn rewards in multiple everyday spending categories, which makes this a winner for someone starting (or restarting) their credit journey.
The card also includes several credit-building features. U.S. Bank will report your (hopefully responsible) payment behavior to all three credit bureaus. It also regularly monitors your account to determine if you’re eligible to have your security deposit returned—when you qualify, it will all be handled automatically.
There’s also a $15 credit toward streaming services annually, which is a small but helpful bonus for loyal customers with streaming subscriptions charged to the card.
What We Don’t Like
Customers need to front a security deposit of $300 to $5,000 (depending on their preferred line of credit) for this card.
Who It’s Best For
We recommend this card for someone who wants to earn rewards and can’t immediately qualify for an unsecured credit card.
Pros & Cons
- Reports to all three major credit bureaus
- No annual fee
- Comes with a $15 annual streaming credit after 11 months of eligible streaming services payments
- Minimum deposit of $300 is required
- Non-bonus categories earn so-so rewards
- Other secured cards may offer rewards that better align with your spending
Card Details
- Earn 4 points per dollar spent on dining and takeout
- Earn 2 points at grocery stores, gas stations and on streaming services and 1 point on all other eligible purchases
- Earn a $15 streaming credit for annual streaming service purchases like Netflix and Spotify
- $0 annual fee

Our Expert Take
The Chase Freedom Rise® is specifically designed to consider applicants with a limited credit history—and it offers rewards to boot.
Why We Like It
When you’re starting from zero, it can be hard to get approved for an unsecured credit card. Though you don’t necessarily need to be a Chase banking customer, having a checking account with at least $250 may increase your approval odds. Beyond that, it’s a good starter card: You’ll earn flat-rate rewards, pay no annual fee and set yourself up to build credit toward future needs.
What We Don’t Like
This card isn’t competitive after you’ve built up your credit, which means you’ll likely want to apply for a card with better benefits or rewards in the future.
Who It’s Best For
The Freedom Rise is best for existing Chase customers who don’t already have an established credit history.
Pros & Cons
- Unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase
- $0 annual fee
- Trip cancellation/interruption coverage
- 5% back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025
- Low-cost financing on purchases over $100 with Chase Pay Over Time℠
- No bonus categories (except for Lyft)
- High APR
- Foreign transaction fee of 3%of the amount of each transaction in U.S. dollars.
- May not be eligible for balance transfers
- Increased odds of approval for depositing money in a Chase checking account, which requires an extra step that may or may not help you get the card
Card Details
- Increase your approval chances – Having a Chase checking or savings account with a balance of at least $250 will increase your chances of getting approved for Chase Freedom Rise®

What We Don’t Like
If approved, you’ll need to provide a cash security deposit of $200 to $5,000 to secure your credit limit.

The ability to earn rewards with no annual fee makes the Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card* one to consider for travelers at heart looking to explore the world without a high credit score.

The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa® Business Card* is an interesting option for business owners who prefer earning cash back to travel rewards.
Why We Like It

The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa® Business Card* comes with a healthy welcome bonus and a generous timeline for meeting it. It even offers a $100 annual statement credit for software subscriptions, such as FreshBooks or QuickBooks.
An intro APR offer on purchases can be especially appealing for small-business owners to kickstart their business: The card offers a 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 billing cycles, followed by a regular APR of 18.99% – 27.99% variable. A balance transfer fee of either 3% of the amount of each transfer or $5 minimum, whichever is greater, applies.
What We Don’t Like
Unfortunately, though, the card does charge a foreign transaction fee of 3% of each foreign transaction.
Who It’s Best For
The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa® Business Card* is best for small businesses who prefer cash rewards and don’t typically charge expenses in foreign currencies.

Our Expert Take
With the Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card, you’ll have everything you love about Southwest Airlines wrapped up in a single package. Take advantage of benefits while flying by earning points on every purchase.
Why We Like It
The Southwest® Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card is loaded with airline benefits, helping to justify its $99 annual fee. It comes with two EarlyBird Check-Ins every year, a 25% discount on in-flight purchases and up to $500 in points transfer fee credits—allowing you to share points guilt-free with employees or other Southwest flyers as an incentive.
Among other perks, you’ll also get to enjoy 6,000 anniversary bonus points each year you renew the card and the option to earn 1,500 tier-qualifying points toward status for every $5,000 spent.
What We Don’t Like
Southwest doesn’t partner with other airlines, so you’ll be limited to flight awards on its limited network. It’s not a good option for first-class travel, and international destinations are extremely limited.
Who It’s Best For
Businesses that find Southwest’s offerings adequate for their needs can enjoy great benefits and rewards with this card.

This card is an excellent pairing to a Southwest personal card for anyone aiming to earn a coveted Southwest Companion Pass while taking on a lower annual fee. Our Expert Take
The student version of one of Bank of America’s mainstay cards is just as good as the original. With the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card for Students, you’ll get access to flat-rate earnings on all purchases.
Why We Like It
You barely have to choose which features matter to you on a credit card like this. With a welcome offer, above-average cash rewards, no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, you’ll likely be happy with your choice.
There’s also an intro APR offer for new cardmembers that may lure you in: a 0% introductory APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers made within 60 days of opening the account. After that, a standard APR of 19.24% – 29.24% variable on purchases and balance transfers will apply. A 3% fee applies to all balance transfers for 60 days from account opening, then 4%.
What We Don’t Like
Even though the card is marketed as a travel rewards card, the points you earn aren’t transferable to airlines or hotels.
Who It’s Best For
This card is a good option for students who want to earn flat-rate rewards at no annual fee.
Pros & Cons
- Multiple rewards redemption options
- Simple and unlimited 1.5 points per $1 on spending
- Earn 3 points per $1 with travel booked through the Bank of America Travel Center
- No foreign transaction fee
- Easy-to-earn welcome bonus
- Good to excellent credit required, which some students may not have
- Rewards are worth less than 1 cent each if not redeemed for a statement credit for travel or dining purchases
Card Details
- Earn unlimited 1.5 points per $1 spent on all purchases, with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees and your points don’t expire as long as your account remains open.
- 25,000 online bonus points after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening – that can be a $250 statement credit toward travel purchases.
- Use your card to book your trip how and where you want – you’re not limited to specific websites with blackout dates or restrictions.
- Redeem points for a statement credit to pay for travel or dining purchases, such as flights, hotel stays, car and vacation rentals, baggage fees, and also at restaurants including takeout.
- 0% Intro APR for 15 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made in the first 60 days. After the Intro APR offer ends, a Variable APR that’s currently 19.24% – 29.24% will apply. A 3% Intro balance transfer fee will apply for the first 60 days your account is open. After the Intro balance transfer fee offer ends, the fee for future balance transfers is 4%.
- When handled responsibly, a credit card can help you build your credit history, which could be helpful when looking for an apartment, a car loan, and even a job. Access your FICO® Score for free within Online Banking or your Mobile Banking app.
- Contactless Cards – The security of a chip card, with the convenience of a tap.
- This online only offer may not be available if you leave this page or if you visit a Bank of America financial center. You can take advantage of this offer when you apply now.
