For those new to investing, embarking on share trades can initially seem like a daunting prospect. Help, however, is at hand in the form of demo accounts.

Offered by the same providers who run trading platforms, would-be traders are invited to hone their skills in the virtual space before taking the plunge and using their own money to buy and sell securities.

To help investors navigate the options on offer, we’ve made our pick of the best demo trading accounts and highlighted the key factors to remember when it comes to trading with virtual cash.

Why We Picked It

eToro is a privately-owned company with over 30 million customers. Accounts include a trading account and ISA (through a partnership with Moneyfarm).

Its demo account provides a good selection of investments, with over 3,400 shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Investors can also trade in cryptocurrencies and indices, for example.

The demo account is designed to be user-friendly and provides live positions for each investment in the portfolio. Advanced trading tools include stop losses, trailing stop losses and take profit orders. Investors also have the option of adding leverage to their trades, with overnight fees for open positions shown.

In terms of research, investors can see the current ‘sentiment’ for each investment, showing the percentage of investors that have a buy position. They also have access to price charts, along with key ratios. However, the analysis and news sections are only available to investors with funded accounts.

One of the drawbacks is that trades are carried out in US dollars, including UK shares denominated in pounds sterling (meaning that investments are subject to foreign exchange movements). It also has a more limited selection of shares relative to some accounts.

Overall, eToro’s demo account is an excellent all-rounder, offering the highest virtual funds with no time limit, along with in-depth research and advanced trading tools.

Why We Picked It

IG is a FTSE 250 company with over 300,000 clients in 17 countries. It offers a wide range of investments, along with advanced technical trading tools, making it an option for more experienced DIY investors.

The company allows would-be investors to open a demo trading account for free to practise their trading skills, providing them with access to £10,000 of virtual funds.

IG provides exposure to 17,000+ markets including indices, shares and bonds.

To react instantly to price volatility, the company says demo account users are able to set alerts on the markets in which they’re interested. One demo account can be used to practise share trading.

IG says its trading simulator is not just aimed at newcomers, adding that experienced traders are able to try out new strategies and tools without incurring ‘real world’ losses.

Overall, IG provides a comprehensive demo account that, given its range of markets, could be suitable for more sophisticated investors.

Why We Picked It

Investopedia is a financial media website which focuses on education for investors, rather than a trading platform as with the other providers.

It offers a demo account with a selection of over 6,000 US shares, in addition to share options. There’s also a separate demo account for cryptocurrency trading.

The demo account is simple to use and provides live positions for each investment in the portfolio. It also allows investors to use various trading tools such as buy limit orders.

In terms of research, investors have access to share price charts, financial analysis and company summaries. There’s also the option to filter shares by criteria such as top gainers, all-time low/high, unusual volume and most volatile.

One of the limitations is that trades are carried out in US dollars and investors can’t trade in UK shares.

Overall, Investopedia provides a fairly basic demo account which is limited to US shares only.

What’s our methodology?

We applied two main criteria in selecting our pick of the best demo trading accounts:

  • Does the provider offer the option of trading directly in shares, rather than only via derivatives?
  • Does the provider charge a fee for opening a demo account?

We compared features across the leading demo accounts, with the greatest weight given to the size of virtual funds, any time limit and the choice of investments.

We also considered whether the account was easy-to-use, as well as the quality of research and option of advanced trading tools.

We overlaid this research with editorial judgment to arrive at our Forbes star ratings.

What’s a demo trading account?

A demo trading account, or trading simulator, offers investors the opportunity to practise buying and selling investments online. It aims to replicate ‘live’ trading as closely as possible.

Demo trading accounts provide investors with virtual funds, typically up to £100,000, which they can use to place trades. Investors can monitor the performance of their portfolio in real time and learn to make timely trading decisions.

What instruments can be traded in demo accounts?

Most demo accounts offer a selection of shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) across UK, European and US markets.

Some accounts also offer trading in alternative assets, but these can be highly speculative and bring the risk of making significant losses.

Pros and cons of demo trading accounts

The advantages of demo trading accounts include:

  • Learning in a risk-free way: investors are trading with virtual, rather than real, money, without the risk of making actual losses.
  • Improving trading skills: investors can develop their trading skills over time without the worry of losing money, helping to build confidence.
  • Trying new strategies or investments: investors can experiment with different strategies and investment types to see if they are successful.
  • Getting to know the platform: investors learn how to use the platform, and any tools, before investing with real money.

However, there are also some disadvantages to consider:

  • Replicating unrealistic trading behaviour: it’s difficult to simulate real-life trading behaviour when investors aren’t trading with their own money. Investors may be tempted to make knee-jerk decisions when faced with actual losses, whereas virtual traders may be more willing to ‘wait and see’ if their portfolio dips into the red.
  • Trading in higher-risk assets: virtual traders may trade in higher-risk instruments than they would otherwise, particularly for demo accounts offering leverage. This is trading using borrowed money from the provider to place higher-value trades, typically used with derivatives.
  • Ignoring individual goals: while demo accounts are a useful way of developing trading skills, investors should consider their own objectives, and appetite for risk, before starting to trade with their own funds.

What other accounts are available?

Once they are confident enough to invest their own money, would-be traders may want to open a general investment or trading account.

To help with this, we’ve looked at our pick of the best trading accounts for beginners and the best platforms for day trading.

However, there are a variety of tax-efficient alternatives which allow investors to pay no income tax on dividends or capital gains tax on any profit made on buying and selling shares. This may be of particular interest given the significant reduction in the capital gains allowance over the next two years.

With this in mind, we’ve also researched our pick of the best Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs) and Junior Stocks and Shares ISAs (JISAs).

However, in the case of SIPPs and JISAs, investors are not able to access the money until a certain age.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can investors count on demo trading accounts being accurate?

Some accounts allow trading on live financial markets with virtual money and replicate the features and tools of a real account as closely as possible. Others provide a more hypothetical demo account based on a set number of options.

However, both types of demo accounts should be accurate in measuring the performance of a portfolio, including the market prices of the investments. That said, not all demo accounts take into account any fees incurred.

What key features should investors look for?

First and foremost, demo accounts should be free to open and use, with no associated fees. Some accounts have no expiry date, while others are only available for a limited period of time.

Investors should also review the choice of investments they wish to trade in, for example, the number of UK or US shares, and the size of virtual funds on offer.

Another consideration is the simplicity of the demo account. Some accounts are easy-to-use but lack some of the advanced features and analysis of more sophisticated accounts. Investors may also want the option of both app and desktop trading.

It’s also worth looking at the quality of research provided, as this varies substantially between providers. Some investors may wish to use advanced technical indicators to make trading decisions, while others may prefer a higher-level overview of each instrument.

Can investors make money with a demo trading account?

No, investors cannot make or lose money with a demo trading account as they are not trading with real money. However, investors may develop the trading skills to make money when they switch to using their own funds.

What are the risks of demo trading accounts?

While there are many positives of demo accounts, it’s also worth bearing in mind some of the risks.

One of the main drawbacks is that it’s difficult to simulate real-life trading behaviour when investors aren’t trading with their own money. It’s easy to make knee-jerk decisions when faced with actual losses, whereas virtual traders may be more willing to ‘wait and see’ if their portfolio dips into the red.

Similarly, virtual traders may trade in higher-risk instruments than they would otherwise, particularly for demo accounts offering leverage. This is trading using borrowed money from the provider to place higher-value trades, typically used with derivatives.

While demo accounts are a useful way of developing trading skills, investors should consider their own objectives, and appetite for risk, before starting to trade with their own funds.

What’s a ‘limit order’ and ‘stop loss’?

Advanced trading tools, such as limit orders and stop losses, can be useful for traders to manage risk and time their trades without having to monitor price movements in real time.

Trading tools offered by demo accounts include:

  1. Buy limit order: an order to buy shares at, or lower than, a set price. So if a trader set a buy limit order at 90 pence, it would only be executed if the price was 90 pence or lower.
  2. Sell limit (or ‘take profit’) order: an order to sell shares at, or higher than, a set price. If a trader set a sell limit order at 90 pence, it would only be executed if the price was 90 pence or higher.
  3. Stop loss: an order to sell shares if the price falls to, or below, a set level. For example, a trader may set a fixed stop loss at 10% below the share price which limits their maximum loss to 10%. This can also be set on a rolling basis to adjust as the share price changes, known as a ‘trailing’ stop loss.

How do demo trading accounts, paper trading accounts and trading simulators differ?

In short, they don’t. They’re just different terms used to describe a simulated trading account.
