Our Expert Take

The Capital One Spark Cash Plus charges a $150 annual fee but earns an excellent unlimited 2% cash back and provides a host of benefits and protections. Though it’s a charge card and must be paid off every month, its late fee is quite small compared to the interest of traditional business credit cards and it offers a large welcome bonus.

Why We Like It

The Capital One Spark Cash Plus credits back your annual fee of $150 for spending $150,000 or more on the card. Even if you aren’t able to meet that threshold, any business with over $7,500 in general spending each year will earn enough in cash-back rewards to negate the annual fee.

In addition to standard convenience benefits such as $0 fraud liability, autopay, account alerts and more, the card offers an extended warranty benefit and a handful of management benefits including free employee cards and expense tracking tools. The card also doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

What We Don’t Like

The only benefit that sets this card apart from other 2% cards is the ability to get your annual fee refunded, but the $150,000 qualifying bar seems a bit excessive.

Who It’s Best For

The Spark Cash Plus is designed for business owners who don’t want to worry about complicated bonus categories and have sufficient cash flow to pay off their charges every month.

Pros & Cons

  • High 2% cash-back rate applies to all purchases
  • Earn unlimited 5% on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • Free employee cards
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No intro APR offer
  • Card balances must be paid in full each month

  • Earn unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase, everywhere—with no limits or category restrictions
  • Enjoy purchasing power that adapts to your business. The Spark Cash Plus card has no preset spending limit, so it can adapt to your needs based on your spending behavior, payment history, credit profile and other factors
  • Earn unlimited 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • Empower your teams to make business purchases while you earn rewards from their transactions with free employee and virtual cards. Plus, automatically sync your transaction data with your accounting software and pay your vendors with ease
  • $150 annual fee – Spend $150,000 annually and Capital One will refund this fee every year
  • Spark Cash Plus has no APR because your balance is due in full every month
  • For businesses that need large spending capacity and want to maximize cash back

Our Expert Take

The Platinum Card® from American Express is a deluxe travel card with a steep price (Terms apply, see rates & fees). But while this card’s hefty $695 annual fee makes it the most expensive personal card on our no limit* credit card list, its available credits, rewards and extra benefits can easily make it worth paying for.

Why We Like It

The Platinum Card® from American Express is all about the credits. The card offers a $200 hotel credit, $240 digital entertainment credit, $155 Walmart+ credit, up to $200 annually in Uber Cash, $200 airline fee credit, $300 Equinox credit and more (Enrollment is required for select benefits and dispersed as monthly credits). With well over a thousand dollars in credits at stake, it’s important to determine if you could actually use enough of them to make the card worthwhile.

Airport lounge access benefits include access to the Global Lounge Collection and complimentary Priority Pass Select membership. Card membership also grants hotel elite status such as Marriott Bonvoy™ Gold Elite status and Hilton Honors™ Gold status along with premium car rental status through Hertz and access to Global Dining by Resy. Travel protections and insurances¹ are provided for cardholders including secondary car rental protection² and cellphone protection¹.

What We Don’t Like

As is now customary for most Amex cards, many of the statement credits are coupon book-type and require an ongoing monthly spend. Others, like the digital entertainment credit and Global Lounge Collection access, require enrollment.

Who It’s Best For

The Amex Platinum works best for travelers who travel regularly and like to do so in style. With the widest selection of lounges available and tons of ancillary benefits, the right traveler may find the fee well worth it.

Our Expert Take

The American Express® Gold Card is an excellent choice for those who want dining and grocery rewards and who don’t mind paying an annual fee of $325 (Terms apply, see rates & fees).

Why We Like It

This card offers an attractive welcome bonus, strong earnings potential and travel protections¹. Statement credits are also available that can easily offset the card’s annual fee. The American Express® Gold Card offers up to $120 in dining credits ($10 monthly) when you use your card to pay at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys locations as well as up to $120 yearly in Uber Cash ($10 monthly), up to $84 in Dunkin’ credits ($7 monthly) and a max of $100 Resy credits, issued semi-annually. Enrollment is required for select benefits. Other perks include access to American Express Experiences, The Hotel Collection with American Express Travel, American Express Preferred Access and Amex Offers.

Additionally, the Amex Gold can help protect you during your travels by providing baggage insurance³ and secondary car rental loss and damage insurance². For those who don’t need all the features of its even more premium counterpart—The Platinum Card® from American Express—but still want luxury benefits associated with a higher-tier Amex card, the Amex Gold could be the perfect fit.

What We Don’t Like

In July 2024, the Amex Gold Card increased its annual fee from $250 to $325. And recouping a portion of that cost through statement credits requires remembering to use your monthly or semiannual installments of them. If you don’t eat out often or don’t frequent chain restaurants, you may find many of the credits won’t work for you.

For diners on the opposite end of the spectrum, starting January 1, 2025, global restaurant purchases exceeding $50,000 will only earn 1 Membership Rewards® points. That’s added to the already existing $25,000 grocery cap.

Who It’s Best For

The Amex Gold is a good option for cardmembers with significant spending at the grocery store and restaurants and who want to turn that spending into a stash of Membership Rewards they can use towards their future travel plans.

Our Expert Take

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is best suited for affluent business owners who wish to travel in style (Terms apply, see rates & fees). This card is undeniably expensive, but its various statement credits and airport benefits mean that many business owners could receive strong value from The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Why We Like It

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express delivers on statement credits, but you’ll want to make sure your business can take advantage of them before applying for this high annual fee card. Among the available credits through 12/31/24 are a $400 Dell statement credit, a $360 Indeed statement credit and a $150 Adobe Creative Solutions statement credit with enrollment. There’s also a $120 wireless telephone statement credit when you enroll and make eligible purchases with your card. Cardholders are also eligible for an airline fee credit of up to $200 for select airlines, as well as a CLEAR® Plus credit of up to $199 and Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credits.

Additionally, the card provides access to the Global Lounge Collection and the ability to use up to 1 million points per calendar year on eligible flights booked through Amex Travel for an extra 35% bonus. Cardholders gain Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status and Hilton Honors™ Gold Status at no additional charge. The Amex Business Platinum also provides premium travel insurances including trip delay insurance¹, trip cancellation and interruption insurance¹, baggage insurance coverage³, cell phone protection¹ and extended warranty¹ and purchase protection³.

What We Don’t Like

While the easiest way to offset some of the cost of the high annual fee is to use the card’s statement credits, it’s rather unlikely that a business will be able to take advantage of all of them. Many of them are divided into monthly, quarterly or semiannual increments too which means they require more attention to ensure they don’t go to waste.

Who It’s Best For

The Business Platinum card works best for business owners who want their Membership Rewards points with a side of style—access to airport lounges, car rentals with status and hotel perks. A whole host of statement credits could lower the sting of the high annual fee for the right business.

Our Expert Take

The American Express® Business Gold Card charges an annual fee of $375 (Terms apply, see rates & fees) but provides a number of travel benefits, solid rewards and excellent access to funds with its no preset spending limit*.

Why We Like It

From a pay over time option*, to employee cards (with no additional annual fee) that earn rewards and integrations with Quickbooks and Vendor Pay by Bill.com, the convenience benefits on the American Express® Business Gold Card are excellent.

This card also comes with access to The Hotel Collection, 24/7 Global Assist Hotline for emergency assistance abroad, a baggage insurance plan³, secondary car rental loss and damage insurance², trip delay insurance¹, and extended warranty coverage³ and purchase protection.

What We Don’t Like

In order to get the 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar on flights and hotels, you’ve got to book directly through the Amex Travel portal. Other cards allow you to get a bonus on your travel spend when you book directly with travel providers.

Who It’s Best For

This card is a great tool for business owners who are looking to earn Membership Rewards, manage expenses and take advantage of free employee cards. If you need employees on the road, rest assured they will be covered by the myriad protections the card provides.

Pros & Cons

Our Expert Take

The American Express® Green Card* is the only card on this list that offers bonus Membership Rewards points for expenses related to transit. And of the personal cards with no preset spending limit on our list, the Amex Green has the lowest annual fee.

Why We Like It

The benefits with the American Express® Green Card* are notably fewer than those provided by the Gold and Platinum cards. But it does provide some credits, such as a $199 CLEAR® Plus credit and $100 LoungeBuddy credit, which can help to offset the card’s annual cost.

What We Don’t Like

While the annual fee is the lowest on the list for non-business cards, it’s not insignificant. And for its cost, the Amex Green is rather lacking in benefits beyond the CLEAR Plus and LoungeBuddy credits. If you don’t specifically need a card with no spending limit, other travel cards may serve you better

Who It’s Best For

The Amex Green will work best for those who want a card that helps them earn American Express Membership Rewards points but aren’t too hung up on fringe benefits like expansive airport lounge access or elite hotel status.

Credit Cards and Travel Rewards Expert

Occasional travelers who want to be treated like VIPs will find that the Amex Green card has an ideal set of perks. The $100 annual LoungeBuddy credit is just enough to cover airport lounge access a few times a year, and the CLEAR credit provides expedited access through TSA security at major airports across the country. Put them together and it’s a perfect balance of benefits for infrequent flyers at a relatively low annual fee.

Pros & Cons

  • No foreign transaction fee

  • High rewards rate on dining, travel and transit
  • Mediocre base rewards rate
  • Limited features and perks

Our Expert Take

The Business Green Rewards Card from American Express* may not be the most rewarding for businesses, as it only offers 2 points per dollar on eligible purchases at American Express Travel and 1 point per dollar on eligible purchases. Despite this, it can still be a valuable asset to small businesses in need of flexible credit thanks to no preset spending limit and a modest annual fee.

Why We Like It

Extra benefits are sparse with the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express*. It does offer standard Amex convenience benefits, however, including car rental loss and damage insurance, baggage insurance, access to Amex Offers and the Global Assist Hotline.

What We Don’t Like

The card doesn’t have a lot of selling points for those looking to earn extra rewards, since the rewards are only doubled if you book through Amex Travel. If you’re willing to spend a little more on an annual fee, you might be able to earn substantially more rewards, depending on where you spend the most.

Who It’s Best For

The Amex Business Green is best for business owners who need a lower fee card with no limit that earns Membership Rewards, but who don’t want to be bogged down with complicated bonus categories.

Pros & Cons

  • The card earns Membership Rewards points, which are highly flexible
  • Spending limit adapts based on factors such as purchase and payment history
  • Some travel benefits
  • Lackluster earning potential, especially compared to other business cards
  • $95annual fee

Card Details

  • No preset spending limit

Our Expert Take

There’s little in The Plum Card® from American Express’s offering to justify its steep, $250 annual fee (Terms apply, see rates & fees). With an early pay discount of 1.5% or extra time to pay and a handful of oft-standard Amex purchase protections³, much of what the card offers is found on other flat-rate cash-back credit cards.

Why We Like It

The Plum card offers standard Amex convenience benefits, including car rental loss and damage insurance², extended warranty³, purchase protection³, access to Amex Offers and the Global Assist Hotline. It’s a pay-in-full card, but cardholders have up to 60 days to pay off their charges without interest.

What We Don’t Like

For a card that charges a $250 annual fee, it’s severely lacking in the benefits department. And while having up to 60 days to pay off your balance provides extra flexibility, you can only earn the 1.5% cash back on the portion of your eligible balance paid within 10 days of the statement closing date.

Who It’s Best For

This card is great for business owners who aren’t driven by rewards, but instead value the flexibility to have no preset limit* and occasionally need more time to pay off balances.

Pros & Cons

  • Up to 60 days to pay, interest-free
  • 1.5% Early Pay Discount, with no cap on what you can earn back
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • High annual fee
  • Lackluster benefits

Card Details
