How to answer why do you want to be part of this fellowship program? ›

Defining a “Big Picture” for yourself is your first step to answering the “why” question. By articulating a vision for your career or future academic life, it is easier to explain why you have decided to pursue a specific fellowship.

Definitions. Stipend: A form of support paid to an individual, typically originating from a fellowship that is meant as a subsistence allowance to help defray living expenses during a research training experience.

I am self motivated, a hard worker, I have realistic goals and aspirations, and I wish to make a contribution to the betterment of society as a whole. Fundamentally, it is not so much about me as it is about others.

Fellowships are great for students who wish to pursue research in a specific field. The publication award will not only provide financial assistance but add credibility to the research and inspire other foundations to support you in your endeavours.

Talk about what you've done to prepare yourself to be the very best candidate for the position. Use an example or two to back this up. Always point back to an example when you have the opportunity. Link your answers to your future academic career goals.

A stipend is a fixed amount of money an organization pays people to perform a task or set of tasks over a period of time. A stipend can also be a reimbursem*nt for work-related expenses, like costs to travel to a work event. In addition to salaries, some employers offer stipends as fringe benefits.

If you meet the requirements to receive a stipend, the amount an employer provides is at their discretion. There is no minimum amount for a stipend, and it can equal less than the minimum wage per hour worked.

Fellowships are funded, short-term opportunities, that can last from a few weeks to a few years. They can be focused on professional, academic and/or personal development. Fellowships are sponsored by a specific association, organization, institution, or government which sets the eligibility requirements.
