#TheLinkedInGuruGazette LinkedIn Tip of the Week: Be Effective on LinkedIn by Publishing a Newsletter.

Hello again everyone and welcome to the 27th edition of#TheLinkedInGuruGazette! I never thought when I started in August 2020 that I would be doing this for over two years!

Do me a great favor and when/if you see this in your Email, please open it on LinkedInand react and comment. It will give me a much better idea of who is actually reading this!Thank you!

A ❤️felt thank you to the 25,300+ newsletter subscribers for coming along on this journey!

FYI, if you click "Subscribe" to a LinkedIn Newsletter it does not mean that you are giving anyone your Email address. All it means is that you want to receive a notification and/or Email message the next time the author publishes a Newsletter.

Please understand that I will never see your Email address and there is no chance that you will receive any SPAM when you subscribe!

Introduction

Are you thinking about publishing a LinkedIn Newsletter? Do you already publish and would like to improve your Newsletter value and/or reach?

LinkedIn Newsletters have been around for almost two and a half years now. And, many people think they have run their course and are no longer valid.

I'm here to dispel that rumor and pass along some tips that (if you follow them) will make your existing Newsletter better or help you start doing a Newsletter with these best practices (IMHO) in mind.

I have been publishing my Newsletter for over two years now and I think it is still going strong (see my statistics in the image I've provided).

I've listed some best practices that I found in LinkedIn help and also added some of my own to this edition. I hope you find this helpful. Please let me know what you think in the comments, ask any question, and add any advice you might think I might have missed. I would love to learn from your experience!

Best Practice Before Publishing

Here are some tips to think about before you create your Newsletter:

  1. Choose a name for your Newsletter that describes a clear theme that your audience can understand. Make sure this is a name you want to use for a long time because changing the name can confuse your subscribers.
  2. Upload a logo for your Newsletter to increase engagement (300x300 pixels recommended).
  3. Choose a frequency of your Newsletter that will fit your schedule and allow you to provide a quality edition every time.
  4. Make sure you have a core of connections and followers (let's say at least 1,000) so you will get a good start on building your subscribers.

Please take a look at this LinkedIn LIVE I did with Gillian Whitney before you finally decide to publish a LinkedIn Newsletter. It's from a year ago, but I think it is still relevant.

Best Practice During Publishing

Here are some tips to think about when you are writing each edition of your Newsletter:

  1. Upload a cover photo for each individual article in your newsletter (1280 x 720 pixels recommended). Try to avoid generic stock images. Images with faces and people tend to resonate more with audiences. And, one thing I often use is a GIF which MOVES and tends to attract more attention when I post.
  2. Choose a clear headline for each Newsletter article that can help your audience understand what your article will be about. I also recommend coming up with an ongoing theme for your Newsletter. For example, now all my Newsletters start with the title "Be Effective on LinkedIn by" and then I mention the main topic.
  3. You could get more engagement by adding a few lines of commentary or asking a question in a post when you share your newsletter. In your post description, you could also ask members to subscribe.
  4. Keep the length of your Newsletter to between a 5 - 10 minute read. Let's face it people are busy and they won't read "War and Peace" even if they like your content.

Best Practice After Publishing

Here are some tips to think about after you have published each edition of your Newsletter:

  1. Share your Newsletter articles or your Newsletter page to your network on other social platforms or via email to increase your reach.
  2. Maintain a consistent publishing schedule for your newsletter so that your subscribers can engage regularly with your content.
  3. Put links to your Newsletter in as many different places on your Profile as you can. For example I have links to my Newsletter in my Background photo/Banner (QR code), in my Education Section, in the first entry of my Featured Section, in my About Section, in my Publications Section, and (well, you get the idea) more!
  4. Make sure that you engage with your audience and take the time to comment back when someone comments on your Newsletter. This represents two of my favorite "C"s - "C"urate your "C"ontent!

Summary

So there you have it. That's a wrap on another edition of#TheLinkedInGuruGazette!

Hopefully, what I provide above (BEFORE) will help you decide if you even WANT to do a Newsletter. And, if you do, these tips will make the process (DURING) and (AFTER) even more effective for you.

As I mentioned before, I have been publishing a LinkedIn Newsletter for 2 years and 3 months and (for me, at least) this has been one of the best types of content from both a reach and an engagement perspective. Oh, and one more thing... Newsletters are indexed by Google so publishing a Newsletter can even help your SEO. Try doing a Google search for "Be effective on LinkedIn by" and I think you will see what I mean!

As always, please let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if there is a topic which you would like me to write about in the next Newsletter!

And, as always, please subscribe to this Newsletter and go to my Profile and click the “Follow” button to see more tips in your feed. If you would like access to a whole lot more of my content, do a Google search for#TheLinkedInGuru
