The last six years have been a leadership masterclass of sorts, at the Bob Wetherbee Wetherbee School for Lucky Communicators. Bob was named CEO the day after my second interview, making mine an easy decision to join ATI. If you know him, you know what I mean. I’ve learned so much from Bob, but one experience stands out. Early in my tenure, he invited me to an meeting with the executive team, about a strategic confidential topic. I listened and I wondered, but I was not prepared for what would happen at the end of the meeting. Bob went around the table and asked, “Do you have what you need to be successful?” As you can imagine, it was a rapid fire succession of yeses. As it got closer to my turn, I started to panic. Clearly, everyone else got it. But… I was lost. And I was there to develop the communications strategy to carry it forward. Did I mention I’m a terrible liar?Bob got to me and I took a deep breath and said the understatement of the day. “Actually, I have some questions.” Bob didn’t even hesitate when he responded, “No problem. Let’s find time to go over it again.” Perhaps not coincidentally, a few who followed me around the table also needed a bit more to be successful. We all continued the conversation. I’d like to believe that our tremendous implementation was because we all took the time — and had the confidence — to put in place what we needed. So what’s my takeaway? Find your voice. Give others a voice. Ask questions. Listen. Success doesn’t come by luck. But you can be lucky to work with the right people. As to the future, we go forward with certainty. Our entire team has been studying at their own Bob masterclasses…. and Kimberly Fields has been a star in the Bob School for Future CEOs. As you’ll see in this video, we’re building on our strong foundation.

For those who are responsible for planning the operations and strategic direction of their nonprofit’s board, I offer a few suggestions based on one of the boards that I serve on, Landscape Architecture Foundation.☑️ Make at least 1 seat available to emerging leaders. Their perspective is invaluable.☑️ Meetings in-person should be designed around spending time for breaking bread together and building relationships during which all other work is set aside for maximum and genuine attention towards each other as humans and the greater big picture mission of the organization. ☑️ Hosting online committee meetings has proven effective, because relationships are also built from f2f video interactions, as groups commit time to do actual work together with the best brains. ☑️ Spend less time on fancy presentations and presenting to each other, and more time providing valuable industry updates through conversational report outs and with data!☑️ Focus on information mobility! Communication is a board’s key responsibility. Figure out how to mobilize the information that shows you’re paying attention to your audience’s needs and pain points. If you serve on a board or in an organization that has a board, feel free to offer additional tips from your experience 👇More to come on this topic!#nonprofitleadership #associationmanagement #leadership #service #volunteering #makingadifference

One of the purposes of the NALP #annualeducationconference is to reconnect with others in the industry, especially for those of us in it for a long time. Last week, it was great to catch up with people who I have grown up with in the profession, who have been instrumental in my own career development, (looking at you, Debby, Michele, Emily, Victor, Yujin, Kathren, Carryn). And, then to be sitting next to Carryn at the Flo Recruit dinner! Carryn and I are part of each other’s law firm “origin stories” and it was fun to relive and share how we were trained in that bygone era, from use of significant digits in GPA calculations, the order the doucments appeared in the callback file, printing callback documents on the appropriate colored paper, the correct *full* names of law schools on the appropriately colored file labels, callback reports, FedEx’ing candidate files to Chicago prior to the 5:00 p.m. cutoff, arraning seating charts for recruiting dinners, etc. And, to top the week off, I get to see my oversized headshot at the business meeting, when I was recognized with Clara Solomon and Donna Gerson by our peers at NALP, for doing “work,” that I don’t really consider work. It is so fulfilling when I can connect people and, more importantly, advance other careers. And, to feel and hear the appreciation from the #aapi members, well, it makes it all worthwhile. #nalp #nalpannual #legalrecruiting
