First of all, great idea. Second, there are two ways: gift cards or ticket purchase.
Gift Cards: Treat anyone to a VIP movie experience! Send an eGift card for instant (or scheduled) gratification or mail a classic gift card. Learn more about gift cards here.
Ticket Purchase: If you want to buy someone’s ticket for a specific movie, just pick the movie, showtime and ticket type, and purchase the ticket(s). When you receive the QR code, forward it to the recipient. Know their favorite movie snack? You can include that in your order too (at select theaters).
If you're going together, you can also buy your friend's ticket from the app:

Select desired Movie, Date, and Showtime. (You can browse by Movie or by Theater)

Select the “+ Add Ticket” button.

Tap the downward arrow to choose your ticket type (adult, senior, etc.).

Tap the + sign to assign the ticket to a contact. If the contact isn’t an Atom customer you’ll be asked to choose the phone number or email address for delivery. Even though you’re paying, they will get a ticket sent directly to their phone or email so you don’t have to wait for each other in front of the theater.

To remove a ticket or contact, tap on the downward arrow and select “Remove Ticket.” To get more friends to appear in your contact list, connect Atom to your contacts or Facebook.
