Personality
Mewtwo is a Pokémon that used to hate humans until Ash was petrified from his attacks, he started to change his views on humans. He has calmed since New Island and has an even more change perspective on humans since Ash helped him out once again.
History
Prior to Series
Mewtwo was a Pokémon created by Team Rocket and stored on New Island. Years later, it escaped the evil crutches of Giovanni and resided at New Island only to leave when Ash and several other trainers were invited to New Island and changed his mind about the world. Soon he resided at Mount Quena and has resided there ever since Ash and his friends helped save him from Giovanni and Team Rocket until moving again to an unknown location in the Johto Region.
Since his departure from Mount Quena, Mewtwo began protecting several Pokémon that had been abused by humans. They eventually settled on the isolated Cero Island to live in peace. He was then challenged by Goh to capture, which Ash joined, only to be defeated. After the battle, Ash and Goh reaffirmed their goals with Mewtwo revealing he has been protecting the abused Pokémon and soon after leaving Cero Island, bidding Ash and Goh farewell with the promise that their journeys had only just begun. He then teleported them back to the Cerise Laboratory, allowing them to retain their memories of the encounter.
Rocket's Downfall
It is revealed that Mewtwo had been captured by Team Rocket and had been turned into Giovanni's tool yet again. Giovanni sent Mewtwo out to battle Ash and defeated his Sceptile and Lucario, but eventually fell to Pikachu. After Giovanni was defeated and Ash pummeled his body against the concrete multiple times, Mewtwo was released by Ash. However, Mewtwo wished to be one of Ash's Pokémon to evade being captured by someone else due to the fact that Giovanni had mass produced dozens of Master Balls to many of his agents, hunters, and poachers. Althought he was hestitant at first, Ash agreed with his request and captured Mewtwo in the Master Ball.

- Mewtwo had a passing mention in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon. When the Mirage Mewtwo was created, the Mirage Master claimed, "This is not the same Mewtwo that you're all familiar with."
