It is a common misconception that apprenticeships are only for school leavers, when in fact there is no upper age limit to apprentices – they are available at any age and are a great way to restart your career or progress in your current career.

We spoke to two students from our first cohort of Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher Higher Apprenticeship students who both graduated with distinctions.

Darren Layco*ck, who is now an Engineering Trainer at the University of Sheffield, said: “I started my apprenticeship with Barnsley College at the age of 52 having only been in the education sector for one month.

“I decided to complete an apprenticeship because I had years of engineering industry experience, but I wanted to progress in my role and learn the theory behind teaching to support my role as an Engineering Trainer.

“It fills me with immense pride knowing that at my age, with great tutors supporting me, I achieved a distinction – something I would never have previously considered!”

Richard North, who is now also an Engineering Trainer at University of Sheffield, added: “The apprenticeship was challenging but ultimately very rewarding. As a dual professional teacher, it has given me an in-depth insight into the teaching theories that I use daily.

“At 42, I am incredibly proud to have achieved a distinction and I couldn’t have done it without the help and guidance of the tutors at College. This course has given me a real appetite to take the next steps, and last week I began a Level 6 part-time course.”
