The Apple Mastercard from Goldman Sachsis a good credit card for people who make a lot of purchases with Apple Pay, and it’s easily worthwhile given its rewards and $0annual fee. Apple purchases made with the Apple Card via Apple Pay will yield 3% cash back, while other Apple Pay charges will provide 2% back. Those cash back rewards can be redeemed for Apple Pay purchases, put toward the account balance, or messaged to friends and family.

If you do not regularly use Apple Pay, this card is not for you. Cardholders will receive just 1% cash back on non-Apple Pay purchases, which is pretty much average for a rewards card. Its regular APR range is similarly unspectacular.

Apple Card Review Highlights

Financing Options

Apple previously said its “goal is to provide interest rates that are among the lowest in the industry”.The card offers an introductory rate of0% for 6 - 24 months on new Apple purchases (terms apply). However, it has a regular APR of 19.24% to 29.49% (V), which is unfavorable compared to the average APR on a credit card, 18.2%.

Strong Apple Pay Rewards

The Apple Card is most rewarding when used through Apple Pay. Cardholders earn 3% back when buying Apple products using Apple Pay. Other Apple Pay purchases earn cardholders 2% back.

Average Physical-Card Rewards

Apple Card purchases made with the physical credit card, rather than via Apple Pay, earn just 1% back. The average cash rewards card gives 1.15% back on all purchases, according to WalletHub data. In contrast, the best rewards credit cards offer the equivalent of at least 2% back on all purchases.

No Fees

The Apple Card has no annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, and no late fee. The average credit card charges a $22.22 annual fee, a 1.57% foreign fee and a late fee of up to $33.75, according to WalletHub’s Credit Card Landscape Report.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the new Apple Mastercard from Goldman Sachs is not the first Apple credit card to hit the market. There was a Barclays card offering rewards on Apple purchases, also an iTunes Credit Card for a time, but it has been discontinued.

How do I apply for the Apple Card?

Reply

5

Adam McCann, Financial Writer

@adam_mcan

The only way to apply for the Apple Card is through the Wallet app on an iOS device, such as an iPhone or iPad. Other than making you sign in to iCloud, the application itself is pretty similar to any other credit card application. Applying should only take a few minutes.

How to Apply for the Apple Card:

  1. Update your Apple device to the latest iOS version.
  2. Make sure there is no freeze on your credit report.
  3. Sign in to iCloud and open the Wallet app on your device.
  4. Tap the “Add” button (a plus sign), select the Apple Card, and click “continue.”
  5. Fill in the application with your name, date of birth, phone number, address, last four SSN digits, citizenship status, and income.
  6. Scan your driver's license or government-issued photo ID if prompted. Only some applicants will be asked to do so.
  7. Accept the terms and conditions and submit your application.
  8. Wait for a decision from Goldman Sachs, the Apple Card's issuer.

If you are approved for the Apple Card, which should happen right away, you will see an initial credit limit and APR. You can choose whether to accept or reject the offer. If you accept, there will be a hard pull of your credit. Otherwise, there will not be a hard pull, but you will not get the card.

Assuming you're approved for the Apple Card after applying, you'll see the card in the Wallet App and Apple Pay right away. You can use it to make purchases even before the physical card comes in the mail.

You can make an Apple Card payment online, by phone, through the Marcus by Goldman Sachs mobile app, or by mail. To pay an Apple Card bill online, log in to your online account and click on “Payments.” Then, choose how much to pay, when to pay it, and where the payment is coming from. Marcus by Goldman Sachs does allow cardholders to set up automatic payments, too.

What are the key things to know about the Apple Cards cash back program?

Maria Adams, Credit Cards Moderator

@m_adams

The most important thing to know about the Apple Card's cash back program is that it awards cardholders with 1 - 3% cash back, depending on the type of purchase. Another good thing to know is that the Apple Card's cash back program distributes rewards on a daily basis. The same day a purchase processes, you will receive the cash back for that purchase. It's also worth noting that there's no limit to the amount of cash back the cardholders can...

@m_adams

You need a credit score of above 700 to get the Apple Card, which means at least good credit is required for approval. While it's possible to be approved with a lower score if you have a high income or other positive factors, it's best not to take the risk.

It's good to note that the Apple Card credit score requirement is comparable to that of other similar cards on the market. Several [url https://wallethub.com/answers/cc/credit-card-with-no-annual-fee-and-cash-back-2140665830/]$0 annual fee...

Can I do a balance transfer with my Apple Card?

Reply

2

Chip Lupo, Credit Card Writer

@CLoop

No, you cannot do a balance transfer with your Apple Card. The issuer does not allow balances from other issuers' accounts to be transferred to the Apple Card. In general, balance transfers allow you to shift high-interest debt from your current account to another issuer's credit card and pay off the balance, presumably at a reduced interest rate.

Although the issuer does not allow balance transfers with the Apple Card, there are plenty of options from other issuers to choose...

No, there isn't a Nike credit card at the moment. However, this doesn't mean you are out of options, as there are many credit cards you could use for Nike purchases. A good option is the Apple Card that offers 3% for purchases you make at Nike. On top of that, the card has a $0 annual fee.

Customer service is lacking, as it is with Apple in general. My phone was stolen, and they hacked into my Apple ID/iCloud, changing the email and phone number associated with my account. Apple says there's nothing they can do, and I basically have to accept my losses. The amount of fraud and identity theft resulting from this incident has turned into a grand larceny case. On the day they stole my phone, they opened a Goldman Sachs Apple Card in my name, accruing $6,497.27 in fraudulent charges. I requested that the fraudulent email be changed to my valid email by verifying my identity, so they could expedite sending the detailed statement to me for the detective working on my case. However, customer service tells me they are unable to do so; they can only email the statement to the email on file (the fraudulent email) or mail me the statement, which takes 7-10 business days. I have called several times, explaining that time is of the essence, and they have not been helpful. I would never apply for this card or purchase another Apple product again. The lack of urgency on behalf of anything related to Apple has been extremely disappointing.

This bank does NOT have your back on purchases. I rented a room believing it was from Holiday Inn Express. Somehow, I ended up on a different site. After renting the room, I reviewed the receipt and it showed $260 instead of the expected $130. I contacted the site and they informed me there was nothing I could do. I filed a complaint with my Apple Card; they investigated for months and concluded that it was a legitimate purchase. I never stayed in the room. They are useless, making money off regular people.

The company didn't handle my dispute appropriately. I actually sent very clear evidence that the charge was not correct. I was told that evidence is sometimes not reviewed thoroughly and that I could open a new dispute. Don't get this card! Goldman Sachs is horrible.

I made a payment of $3,000 towards my card; two days later, I received an email stating my credit limit was cut to $2,550, which now maxes out my card, and my $3,000 seems to have gone down the drain because I was told I can't get my money back and nothing can be done about raising my credit limit again until I try in 12 months. They've essentially pocketed $3,000.

The company was completely negligent in handling a dispute where I provided adequate proof that items were not received. I attempted to submit the dispute 3-4 times, each time with no resolution. There is no one available to discuss your concerns either. I do not recommend this card or any card issued by Goldman Sachs. They are greedy and do not support or care for their customers.

They are extremely discriminatory. I had paid a financial advisor to set up and make payments for me while I've been in a medical treatment center for pain and trauma recovery. My advisor didn't set up the payments for me on cards other than this current card. I've never missed a single payment on this card and I've paid in full every month. They decided to decrease my credit limit from $2,000 to $700 even though I still have a credit score over 600 and had made disputes with the credit bureau that the missed payments on my other cards weren't my fault. Goldman essentially said they will not revert my credit limit back to the $2,000, and I know for a fact they are doing this to customers in a predatory way. I've been using this card for my medical bills and I've always paid my balance on time in full every month.

About four days ago, this review would have been much higher. I absolutely loved this card and would use it for all my everyday purchases... until it was randomly closed for "user agreement violations." I have never once broken the user agreement, and I've always made the minimum payment (often paying off the card in full). I was not attempting cash advances, chargebacks, or using it for cryptocurrency or gambling. I was using it for everyday expenses such as groceries, gas, Apple TV, and iTunes. Reaching out to them was no help and honestly let me see just how poor the customer service is. While they were all very nice, it's incredibly clear that Goldman Sachs gives them very little information. One of the representatives told me that I had closed the account, which is absolutely not true, while most just told me the reasoning was in the email and that they could not give me any more specifics. I have since continued to sever any other ties I currently have with Goldman Sachs.

Long story short: I know I'm overly bitter about this. But if you are like me and trying to rebuild your credit, steer clear. Because once you actually improve your credit score, they could cancel your card out of nowhere and cause your score to plummet.

The Worst - Don't Do It: Even for Apple purchases versus any bank card. Most banks offer a better rebate and don't limit you to Apple. This account is with Goldman Sachs. Goldman Sachs doesn't even provide you with an account number or publish a customer support 800 number on their statements, which, by the way, you cannot view without an Apple device. Think about it, you cannot manage your own account unless you do it with an Apple device! Imagine if you had an Exxon branded Visa card with Chase or Citibank, and the only way you could manage it is through Exxon, but the local Exxon station attendant would think you're nuts if you went there for help, or asked for your balance or assistance with an error. Horrendous customer support, unsatisfactory rewards program (unless you just want to keep shovelling it back into Apple). If it wouldn't ruin my credit, I would just stop paying the card. Worst banking decision I've ever made.

My issue with the Apple card is that it takes too long for payments to post. I bought a new phone with my card and paid it off before the due date. It's a week later, and my payment still hasn't shown up on the app. It shouldn't take that long.
