At this time, the College Board has not officially released a scoring worksheet that reflects the latest updates to AP® Physics 1. In order to create our projected curve, we have taken the relative percentages of the MCQ and FRQ as well as the point values of each question as outlined In the scoring guidelines released for 2019-2020 here.
Earning a 3, 4, or 5 is generallyaccepted as scoring well on an AP® exam. As reported by the College Board, a 3 is ‘qualified,’ a 4 ‘well qualified,’ and a 5 ‘extremely well qualified.’ Depending on the college or universityyou plan to attend, credits can be awardedfor scores within the 3-5 range. Review the AP® Credit Policy for schools you’re considering with theCollege Board’s search tool.
When assessing your performance on the Physics 1 Exam, think about the exam content and your performance versus your peers. According to the latest 2020 AP® Physics 1 score distribution report, only 51.6% of students received a passing score of 3 or higher. AP® Physics 1 is one of the most difficult AP® exams. Any passing score is an accomplishment.
What is the average AP® Physics 1score?
The average AP® Physics 1score changes yearly due to factors such as student preparation and revision of exams. The College Board typically attempts to maintain consistency in exams for each subject. We can analyze the average AP® Physics 1score more efficiently by considering a multi-year trend.
We can refer to the AP® Student Score Distributions released every year by the College Board. The current version of AP® Physics 1 has only been offered since the 2014-2015 school year. These reports show us that the mean score in 2015 was 2.32, in 2016 was 2.33, in 2017 was 2.40, in 2018 was 2.36, in 2019 was 2.51, and 2.65 in 2020. These scores are very consistent but may increase as students and teachers become more accustomed to the new exam.
Why are AP® Physics 1scores curved?
The scores on AP® exams are curved every year by the College Board to standardize student performance across years and across subjects. Courses, AP® Physics 1included, are essentially college-level subjects. The scoring guidelines are intended to emulate the austerity of similar college courses.

How many people get a perfect score of 5 on the AP Physics 1 exam? A perfect score or perfect 5 is when a student gets all answers on both sections of the exam correct. In the year 2022, only one student got a perfect score of 5 on the AP Physics 1 exam. For the 2021 AP exams, only four students scored a perfect 5.
As reported by the College Board, a 3 is 'qualified,' a 4 'well qualified,' and a 5 'extremely well qualified. ' Depending on the college or university you plan to attend, credits can be awarded for scores within the 3-5 range.
Usually, a 70 to 75 percent out of 100 translates to a 5. However, there are some exams that are exceptions to this rule of thumb. The AP Grades that are reported to students, high schools, colleges, and universities in July are on AP's five-point scale: 5: Extremely well qualified.
As a general guide, though, you can consider roughly more than 70% correct as being in the 5 range, 50-69% for a score of 4, 40-49% for a score of 3, 30-39% for a 2, and below 30% would likely be a 1. Again, these ranges are approximations and can vary by subject and by year.
A 50% is considered a 3 or passing. This is when your AP credit is considered in colleges for being qualified, well qualified or extremely well qualified. Also, most exams have multiple parts to them.
The relatively low passing rate on AP® Physics 1 is partly due to the large group of students taking the exam – some of the students in the course might be taking an advanced physics course for the first time or may not have deep expertise in the subject area.
I would say the hardest unit in AP Physics 1 varies from person to person, as it depends on individual strengths and weaknesses. However, a unit that many students find challenging is rotational motion, which covers topics like rotational kinematics, torque, and angular momentum.
Physics 1 has the lowest pass rate of any AP exam (43.3%) along with one of the lowest percentages of students scoring a 5 (just 7.9%). Physics 1 is an algebra-based physics class that explores topics such as Newtonian mechanics, simple circuits, and mechanical waves.
AP test scores are indeed "curved," but it's more accurate to call it a "scaling process." Instead of a traditional curve that compares your performance to other students' performance, the AP exam scaling process converts your raw score (the number of points you earned through multiple-choice questions and free- ...
However, opinions on the difficulty of AP Physics 1 can vary. Some students with a strong background in Math and Science may find the course more manageable, while others may struggle if they do not have a strong STEM foundation.
To clarify, it's quite rare and quite difficult to get a score of 0 on an AP exam. Typically, scores range from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest possible score that indicates the student likely wasn't prepared for the level of the content on the exam.
For example, a 5 could be any composite score between 110 and 150 on one exam. Since scaling varies year to year, there are no exact cutoff numbers for scores for AP tests, and the College Board does not release detailed scoring data.
As I mentioned, 73% of AP Physics C exam test-takers received a passing score of 3 or above. Of that 73%, 23% received a 5, 28% received a 4, and 22% received a 3. Of the non-passing cohort, 15% received a 2, and 12% received a 1. The average score in 2022 was a 3.41.
