Abstract

This chapter focuses on Parker Pillsbury’s 1883 movement memoir, Acts of the Anti-Slavery Apostles. Although the publication appeared at a time in which the fate of the 1875 Civil Rights Act hung in the balance, neither an impending Supreme Court decision nor the precarious status of equal Black rights mobilized the commemorator into action. Instead, the postbellum misinformation surrounding genuine abolitionism compelled him to revisit and resume an antebellum struggle against the nation’s allegedly conservative, corrupt, and proslavery Christian establishment. Exposing the widespread and diabolical anti-abolitionism of northern clerics constituted a principal authorial objective. So, too, did emphasizing the pure and authentic Christianity of antislavery “comeouter” saints. This chapter, then, addresses the ways in which Pillsbury sanctified a segment of the abolitionist dead and how such sanctification came at the expense of antislavery-oriented racial justice. The legacy that he bequeathed pertained not to enduring problems in American race relations, but to the personally more pressing issue of religious bigotry. More than anything else, the memoirist enlisted the prior conflicts of apostolic abolitionists on behalf of a current campaign in which the Free Religious Association targeted ongoing spiritual bondage and clerical tyranny.
