What to Know

Critics Consensus

David Boreanaz's heartsick vampire gets a fresh start in his own series, an edgier counterpart to Buffy the Vampire Slayer that works on its own merits.

Angel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Laura Fries Variety It’s a prospect that would seem to limit writing options, but Whedon and co-hyphenate David Greenwalt have created a scenario that gives Angel’s character lots of emotional and dramatic room to navigate, while still pining over his lost love. Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Angel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Joyce Millman Salon.com "Buffy" creator Joss Whedon has pulled off one of the best surprises of the season. Not only does "Angel" make sense as an extension of the "Buffy" mythology, it makes Angel seem more alive than he's been in about, oh, 240 years. Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Angel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Caryn James New York Times The central message of these series is smartly calculated to resonate with their young audience: putting yourself on the line emotionally is tough and risky, whether you're an alien, a vampire or just a human teenager. Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Angel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Alan Pergament Buffalo News Funny and suspenseful enough to entertain those who have made Buffy the Vampire Slayer a killer show. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Angel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Rich Heldenfels Akron Beacon Journal The show seems a bit soft-headed, especially in turning the once gloriously sharp-tongued Cordelia into someone far wimpier. Like Angel himself, the show is still sorting itself out. Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Angel: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) David Zurawik Baltimore Sun Whedon manages to capture some ofthe same "Buffy" sensibility a rare combination of sexual energy, irony, intelligence, hot bodies, cool moves, action, menace and comic relief. W H Nostalgia right here. Loved this show. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Lucas Vincius M A entrada do 'Wesley' foi perfeita pro grupo e trouxe um toque maus carismático ao enredo de drama sombrio. Top demais. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic series featuring one of the coolest vampires ever! Every bit as great as Buffy. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The vampire with a soul heads to Los Angeles to seek redemption in Season 1 of Angel, a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After moving to LA Angel is met by a half-demon named Doyle who receives visions from the Powers That Be and has been sent to help Angel on his mission to "help the helpless." And before long they are joined by another recent LA transplant, Cordelia Chase; a friend of Angel's from Sunnydale who has come to LA seeking fortune and fame but takes a secretarial job with Angel while waiting for her acting career to take off. The show does a surprisingly good job at both setting itself up as its own series while still connecting back to Buffy the Vampire Slayer with crossovers and interconnecting storylines featuring guest appearances by Sarah Michelle Gellar, James Marsters, Seth Green, and Eliza Dushku. Yet it's not a Buffy clone; using a different visual aesthetic and a darker tone. Delivering a strong first season, Angel has the potential to go places and explore issues that Buffy never could.
