All-Terrain Vehicle Coverage
All-terrain vehicles, or ATVs for short, can be dangerous and expensive to replace, which is why ATV insurance was designed to help cover the costs associated with bodily injury, property damage, theft and even lawsuits.
FAQs
What is an ATV?
Each state has their own definition of an ATV. Typically, ATVs are defined as any motorized vehicle with two or more wheels meant for off-road driving. An ATV is not intended or licensed for use on roads and highways. A utility vehicle or side-by-side (UTV) is likely considered an ATV for insurance purposes.
What does ATV insurance cover?
ATV insurance has coverages similar to those you would see in auto insurance. Below are the most common ATV coverages.
Bodily injury liability
This coverage helps pay for injuries to third parties that are the result of your operation of an ATV. If you are sued after an accident, it can help cover your legal fees as well. Bodily injury liability typically has a limit per person and a total limit per accident.
Property damage liability
This coverage helps pay for damage to a third party’s property caused by your ATV, including damage to someone’s personal property, home or yard. Property damage liability usually has a limit per incident.
Collision
If you ATV is damaged in an accident, this coverage will pay to for repair or replacement. Like auto coverage, you will select a deductible that you are responsible for paying before the insurance company pays. This coverage is usually optional but may be required if you have financed your ATV.
Comprehensive
Unlike collision, this coverage pays for damages caused by things like theft, vandalism and fire. You will select a deductible that you are responsible for paying before the insurance company pays. This coverage is usually optional but may be required if you have financed your ATV.
Medical payments
This coverage pays for medical expenses, like ambulance rides, X-rays and surgery, incurred by riders of your ATV. Medical payments coverage is optional.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist
If you or another rider of your ATV is involved in an accident with a party who doesn’t have sufficient insurance or doesn’t have insurance at all, this coverage would provide assistance. Like bodily injury liability, this coverage has limits per person and per accident. Uninsured/Underinsured motorists coverage is optional.
What doesn’t ATV insurance cover?
Standard ATV policies only cover recreational or commuting (like traveling from your house to your barn) use. Most policies exclude organized racing. Since riding an ATV on highways and roads is illegal, such usage is usually excluded. If a specific road allows for ATV use, as is common on government owned property, you would be covered. Likewise, ATVs are allowed to cross roads and highways but only at a place designated for vehicle crossings.
Who is covered under an ATV policy?
Often, ATV insurance will cover your vehicle and any riders as long as the person operating the ATV is at least 16 years old and has a valid driver’s license. It is important to review your policy and talk with you agent about who is covered under your policy.
Is ATV coverage required?
This largely depends on where you ride your ATV. For example, ATV insurance is not required in private property during permissive use. On the other hand, many state and federal-owned lands and parks only allow ATVs that carry liability coverage. Additionally, coverage may be required if you have financed your ATV. It is important to check your state to determine if and under what circ*mstances insurance is required. Even if ATV insurance isn’t required, ATV riders should consider protecting themselves and others with proper insurance.
Does homeowners insurance cover ATV accidents?
Typically, homeowner’s coverage will not cover damage to an ATV as property coverage does not extended to vehicles. Vehicles, like autos, watercraft and ATVs require their own insurance policy. Your homeowners insurance may cover your liability if a third party was injured or suffered property damage after an ATV accident. Even if you have some coverage in your homeowner’s policy, there may be limitations on coverage, so it is a wise decision to understand any coverage gaps.
Will auto insurance cover an ATV accident?
Generally, an auto insurance policy will not provide coverage for an ATV related accident.
Does health insurance cover ATV accidents?
In the event you are involved in an ATV accident and cannot rely on another party’s liability insurance to cover your medical costs, you might have coverage under your own health insurance. Health insurance often excludes hazardous activities so be sure to check your policy to determine if off-roading would be covered.
What does ATV insurance cost?
Costs for insuring your ATV vary by carrier. They will review driving history, age of riders, location of use and the type of machine when determining premium. Carriers may also take into account the top speed of your ATV, how often it is used, how it is used and your credit history. You may be eligible for discounts on your premium if you have more than one ATV to insure, if you have multiple lines of coverage with one carrier or if you have an anti-theft device on your ATV.
