Will all printers print labels? ›

You don't necessarily need a special printer to print shipping or mailing labels. Whether you need an inkjet printer, a laser printer, or a thermal label printer depends on the results you want to achieve and the money you are willing to invest.

The first thing you should do when your label printer is acting up: check all the hardware. Open the printer. Make sure there is paper, with the label side facing up. Reset the paper, close the printer and hit the feed button, just to double-check.

However, if your label printing needs include color and detailed images, thermal printers are very limited. You will need a laser printer to print most labels with colors and/or images. But if you need a high volume of black and white labels for shipping or labeling, a thermal printer will be your best bet.

Can you print labels with a regular printer? You absolutely can! Simply treat Avery label sheets like you would blank sheets of paper.

Thermal printers keep costs low as they do not rely on ink to print. No ribbons, cartridges or other supplies need to be replaced to ensure continued use.

The most common reasons why labels don't print in the right place are: Your printer settings are not adapted. Your labels contains too much text information or the font size is too big. You might not be using the correct label templates.

As zero ink printers, thermal printers and label makers are naturally reliant on sophisticated printer hardware, such as thermal print heads to get the job done. In a similar fashion as to why ink cartridges are so expensive, you are ultimately paying for the technology inside.

What is an IRD printer? ›

An Image Replacement Document (IRD) is a substitute paper equivalent of an electronic check from an ICL file. It may be used as the legal equivalent of the original check. Any printer can print output that looks like an IRD, but not all printers can print a valid IRD.

But do you know how long thermal printing lasts? You can find two different types of thermal printing: direct thermal printing and thermal transfer printing. The lifespan of direct thermal printing is around 7-25 years, whereas thermal transfer printing lasts 2—35 years.

Inkjet technology, (full color printing), has improved greatly in the last 5 years and is emerging as a alternate to thermal. Inkjet printing has become faster than earlier versions and offers a very durable imprint. So durable it holds up to liquids and chemicals. The greatest advantage is the eye catching color.

Generally speaking, both laser and inkjet printers can be used to print 4” x 6” labels. It's not so much about the type of printer, but whether the specific model supports non-standard sheet sizes.
