VISA APPLICATION PROCESSING TIMES
The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Andrew Giles, released a media statement this week outlining preliminary steps being taken to speed up visa processing. These include:
- Officers previously focused on travel exemptions have been redirected to visa processing, with nearly 140 new staff in visa processing roles since May 2022.
- A further a surge capacity to work overtime, drawn from across the Department and the Australian Border Force has been established.
745,000 visa applications have been finalised since the beginning of June 2022, including over 645,000 offshore visa applications. This includes 388,000 visitor visas, 62,000 student visas and 9,550 temporary skilled visas.
The number of applications received in June 2022 is 6.5% higher than May 2022 and there was a 10.6% increase in finalised applications.
Processing will prioritise key offshore caseloads, temporary skilled, student and visitor to ensure more people can travel to Australia and contribute to economic growth, and assist with labour shortages.

**A small proportion of applicants for Australian citizenship by conferral are not required to attend a ceremony. For Descent and Evidence applications, allow an additional 10 days for printing and postage of your certificate. If you applied from outside Australia, postage will take longer.
Important
Visa processing times were significantly delayed due to the impacts of COVID-19 and international border restrictions and closures. As a result ofAustralia’s border reopening to all fully vaccinated travellers from 21 February 2022,the visa processing times are now slowly reducing as processing has resumed.
Circ*mstances that affect processing times
We assess applications on a case-by-case basis, and actual processing times can vary due to individual circ*mstances including:
- whether you have lodged a complete application, including all necessary supporting documents
- how promptly you respond to any requests for additional information
- how long it takes to perform required checks on the supporting information provided
- how long it takes to receive additional information from external agencies, particularly in relation to health, character, and national security requirements
- for permanent migration visa applications, how many places are available in the migration programme
- for citizenship applications, the time taken to attend a Citizenship Ceremony or receive a Citizenship Certificate.
