Ingredients And Substitutions For Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes
You can make these amazing air fryer sweet potato cubes with just a few simple ingredients. Here is what you need to make them.
- Sweet potatoes – 2-3 medium-sized sweet potatoes. You will need about 3.5 cups of peeled and cubed sweet potatoes. Make sure to use fresh and not frozen potatoes. For a shortcut, you can buy prepared, fresh cut sweet potatoes at most grocery stores, although I felt that peeling and cutting them yourself was less expensive and yielded more flavorful potatoes.
- Olive oil – extra virgin olive oil is used to help the seasoning stick to the potatoes as well as ensure they become golden and flavorful as they cook. To cut down on the calories, you could also use olive oil spray.
- Seasoning – I used garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper since I like to keep it simple and this seasoning combination is so delicious with sweet potatoes. Some other seasoning options that are so good would be cajun seasoning or taco seasoning.

How To Make Sweet Potato Cubes In The Air Fryer
Here is a summary of the steps for how to make these incredible air fried sweet potatoes.
Prep the sweet potatoes – wash and scrub the sweet potatoes and dry them well. Then peel them.
Then cut them into ½-¾ inch even size cubes.Note: the smaller you cut the sweet potatoes the faster they will cook and vice versa.
Season the sweet potatoes – place the peeled and cut potatoes into a medium bowl, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle them with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Then toss to coat them all.
Air fry – preheat the air fryer to 400°F. If your air fryer does not have a preheat setting then heat the air fryer empty at 400°F for 2-3 minutes, before adding the sweet potato cubes. Place the sweet potatoes in the air fryer in an even layer, give the basket a good shake to even them out then air fry them for 12-15 minutes, until tender and golden.
Serve and enjoy – once the potatoes are done, let them rest for a few minutes, then serve warm and enjoy!
Expert Tip: if you let the potatoes rest in the air fryer after they cook, with the heat turned off then the residual heat will remove any excess moisture and allow the potatoes to crisp up even more.
Recipe Tips
- Cut the sweet potatoes into even sizes – try to cut your sweet potatoes into uniform sizes for even cooking. You don’t want some to cook more or less than the others. A good size for them is to aim for ½-¾ inch cubes.
- Season them well – a light coating of olive oil and seasoning not only enhances the natural flavor of the sweet potatoes but also helps the sweet potato cubes to become golden as they cook.
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer – you want to place the potatoes in an even layer in the air fryer so they can get nice and golden and evenly cooked on all sides. If you have a smaller air fryer then you may need to cook them in batches.
- Shake or turn halfway through – you want to shake the potatoes in the air fryer basket halfway through the cooking time, which will result in nice, crispy potatoes that taste like french fries. If you have a tray air fryer then just turn the tray around or flip the potatoes on the tray halfway through the cooking time.
- Let them rest – once the potatoes are done cooking, let them rest for a few minutes in the air fryer with the heat off. This allows the residual heat to remove any extra moisture, which will help the sweet potatoes crisp up even more (as previously noted).

Storage And Reheating Tips

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes?
You do not need to peel the sweet potatoes, this is entirely up to you. Some people prefer to peel them because of the texture of the skin. In some recipes peeled sweet potatoes might be preferred for a uniform skin-free appearance.
Do I need to soak the sweet potatoes before cooking them in the air fryer?
In this recipe it is not necessary to soak the sweet potatoes since we are cutting them into smaller cubes, which gets them nice and crispy. Soaking them is usually preferred to remove some starch for extra crispy sweet potato fries.
How long does it take to cook sweet potato cubes in the air fryer?
The cooking time will depend on your air fryer and the size you cut your potatoes. As well as your preferred tastes and texture preferences. In this recipe, we found that anywhere between 14-17 minutes yielded beautiful, golden, flavorful sweet potatoes.
