Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (1)

You can view and add information about your photos. You can:

  • Assign titles and captions to photos

  • See the date and time a photo was taken

  • Review information about the camera that took the photo

  • See badges that indicate the state of the photo

  • Add or change the location of photos

  • Change the date and time information for photos

Open Photos for me

View and add information about photos

Use the Info window to view or change information about a photo or a group of photos.

  1. In the Photos app Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (3) on your Mac, click a photo to select it (or Command-click to select multiple photos), then click the Info button Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (4) in the toolbar, or press Command-I.

  2. Edit any of the following:

    • Title: Enter a name in the Title field at the top of the Info window.

      Tip: To quickly add titles to photos right in the main Photos window, choose View > Metadata > Titles, click the field that appears under a photo when you hold the pointer over it, then type a name.

    • Caption: Enter a caption in the Caption field.

    • Favorite: Click the Favorite button Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (5) to mark the photo as a favorite (the photo appears in the Favorites album). Click the button again to unmark it.

    • Keywords: Enter keywords in the Keywords field. As you type, Photos suggests keywords that you’ve used before. Press Enter when you’ve finished a keyword.

      To remove a keyword, select it and press Delete.

    • People and pets: Click the Add button Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (6) and type a name to identify a person or pet.

      To identify multiple people in a photo, click the Add button Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (7) and drag the face identifier over each person you want to identify.

    • Location: Enter a location in the Location field. You can also copy and paste location information. To change the location, search for a different location or drag a pin on the map. (You can’t assign a location if your computer is not connected to the internet.)

      To copy location information, choose Image > Location > Copy Location. To paste location information, select the photo, then choose Image > Location > Assign Location.

Tip: You can add text captions, dates, arrows, and other shapes directly to a photo using the Markup tools. See Use Markup to write or draw on a photo.

Display titles, other metadata, and badges

You can display the title you assign to photos, metadata such as a filename, and badges that identify whether the photo has been edited.

  • In the Photos app Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (9) on your Mac, choose View > Metadata > [metadata name].

Original photo was taken as a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photo that combines three photos taken at different exposures.

Original photo was taken as a RAW photo. The badge appears as JPEG + RAW when the photo was taken as a RAW photo that includes a JPEG version.

Item is a Live Photo taken in Portrait mode.

Item is a Live Photo set to Long Exposure.

Item is a portrait photo.

Item is a spatial photo or video.

Item is in the iCloud Shared Photo Library.

Change a photo’s date and time

  1. In the Photos app Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (27) on your Mac, select the photos you want to change. Command-click to select more than one photo.

  2. Choose Image > Adjust Date and Time.

    Tip: You can also double-click the date that appears in the Info window to change the date. To show a photo’s Info window, double-click the photo, then click the Info button Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (28) in the toolbar.

  3. Enter the date and time you want in the Adjusted field.

  4. Click a time zone on the map and choose the closest city, if necessary.

  5. Click Adjust.

Remove or restore a photo’s original location

  1. In the Photos app Add titles, captions, and more to photos in Photos on Mac (29) on your Mac, select the photos you want to change.

  2. Choose Image > Location, then choose Hide Location or Revert to Original Location.

If you manually assigned location information to a photo that did not have it, Revert to Original Location removes the location information you assigned.
