Brittany Rogers: Hello and welcome to the Fall 2024 term. My name is Brittany Rogers and I am a Writing Specialist in the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services. Better known as OASIS.
We in OASIS are here for you throughout your program, to help you succeed. If you want to develop your writing, APA, or student success skills join me and other writing experts and peer mentors for an OASIS live session.
Carnesha Ben: A resource that I highly recommend you check out are the Live Writing Accountability sessions, which are facilitated by a peer mentor. My name is Carnesha Ben, and I am one of the peer mentors for the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services, better known as OASIS. During these sessions, you have the opportunity to work on any assignment or project that are due within the week. You also get the opportunity to connect with other Walden students. You also will share your academic goals that you will work towards during this session. And you will have an hour and a half to work on those assignments. And at the end, you and the other Walden students will discuss what you learned and what you hope to continue to work on after the session. This is a really great session and a wonderful opportunity to connect with other Walden students. So, we look forward to seeing you there.

Like any good essay, a compare and contrast paper must contain a clear organizational structure that gives your most important points their own body paragraphs.
The key to a good compare-and-contrast essay is to choose two or more subjects that connect in a meaningful way. The purpose of conducting the comparison or contrast is not to state the obvious but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities.
A compare and contrast essay example can be an opinion piece comparing two things and making a conclusion about which is better. For example, “Is Tom Brady really the GOAT?” It can also help consumers decide which product is better suited to them. Should you keep your subscription to Hulu or Netflix?
Students should respond that you used compare key words such as similar, at the same time, and likewise. You used contrast key words such as in comparison to, in contrast, and rather.
You may organize compare-and-contrast essays in one of the following two ways: According to the subjects themselves, discussing one then the other. According to individual points, discussing each subject in relation to each point.
example: A bird has two legs, but an insect has six. Sometimes a single sentence can compare and contrast two or more things. example: Birds and insects are both animals, but only birds are vertebrates.
Point-by-Point Format organizes information in a more equal way than Block Format because Point-by- Point analyzes both items on only one point at a time per paragraph, repeating the process from paragraph to paragraph until all points have been fully compared.
In a comparison/contrast essay, a writer must do the following: 1) Identify and explain three or more key points that two or more subjects have in common. 2) Show the similarities and differences between these points. 3) Develop a thesis, indicating his or her position regarding the two subjects.
Here are some examples of hooks that you can use for your compare-and-contrast essay: "They say that 'opposites attract,' but do they really?" "If you think two things can't be more different, think again." "You might be surprised to learn that two seemingly similar things can have vast differences."
Comparison in writing discusses elements that are similar, while contrast in writing discusses elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay, then, analyzes two subjects by comparing them, contrasting them, or both.

Introduction: Your first paragraph should introduce both topics to your reader, briefly summarizing each, and lead to your thesis statement. Your thesis will often state which topic you prefer and why.
Academic writing focuses on proving a theory or viewpoint in one way or the other and emphasizes upon one specific subject.General writing focuses on general subjects of writing. 02. Academic writing contains contents on specific discipline or field.
With professional writing, the goal is generally to communicate information or influence the opinions of managers, coworkers, clients, or job prospects. While academic writing is strictly formal, it's common to use the first-person point of view in many standard business communications.
Academic writing is formal, evidence-based, and aimed at scholarly audiences, while nonacademic writing is informal, personal, and intended for a wider audience. Choosing the appropriate style depends on the target audience and the writer's specific purpose.
Compare focuses on similarities.Contrast focuses on differences. Topic sentence identifies the topic and the intention to compare and/or contrast X and Y; comments on the degree of similarity or difference. Support Sentences describe and compare features of chosen topics.
