Transcript: Helpful Resources from OASIS for Fall 2024
Brittany Rogers: Hello and welcome to the Fall 2024 term. My name is Brittany Rogers and I am a Writing Specialist in the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services. Better known as OASIS.
We in OASIS are here for you throughout your program, to help you succeed. If you want to develop your writing, APA, or student success skills join me and other writing experts and peer mentors for an OASIS live session.
Carnesha Ben: A resource that I highly recommend you check out are the Live Writing Accountability sessions, which are facilitated by a peer mentor. My name is Carnesha Ben, and I am one of the peer mentors for the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services, better known as OASIS. During these sessions, you have the opportunity to work on any assignment or project that are due within the week. You also get the opportunity to connect with other Walden students. You also will share your academic goals that you will work towards during this session. And you will have an hour and a half to work on those assignments. And at the end, you and the other Walden students will discuss what you learned and what you hope to continue to work on after the session. This is a really great session and a wonderful opportunity to connect with other Walden students. So, we look forward to seeing you there.
Brenda Hudson: Hi. I'm Brenda Hudson and I'm a core faculty member here in OASIS, where we offer a wide range of skill support services. Including tailored individualized feedback on your scholarly writing through our tuition-free SKIL workshops and courses. Our instructors are dedicated in providing feedback that will help you strengthen your skills and gain confidence in your writing, all in a supportive environment. We have a course for your every need, no matter where you are at in your scholarly journey. From undergraduate to masters, all the way through your capstone or dissertation. Google Scholar search results may include articles from low-quality predatory journals, and citing such articles in your academic work can undermine the credibility of your paper.
To access Google Scholar articles, simply go to the Google Scholar website and search for your desired topics. You can also use advanced search options such as date range, author name, or article title to narrow down your results. Once you locate an article that interests you, click on it to open the full-text version.
Google Scholar can be the best place to start when looking for an article, as it automatically provides links to many Open Access articles, institutional and subject repositories, preprint servers and academic social networks, as you can see in the example on this page.
It has yet to reveal what criteria they are using to select "scholarly" material. Results often vary in quality and it is up to the researcher to determine which of the results are suitable for their purposes.
In searches for clinical trials and systematic reviews, it is said that Google Scholar (GS) should never be used in isolation, but in addition to PubMed, Cochrane, and other trusted sources of information.
If Google Scholar can't find the article, you may have an incorrect article title or doi, or Google Scholar may not have the article in its index. Also, not all of our journal subscriptions will show up in Google Scholar.
Keep in mind that GS has come a long way since it was introduced in 2004. WoS and Scopus have accuracy above the level of 99% while GS has an accuracy level above 95%.
Go to Google Scholar, enter the article title, and click Search: Note: For best results, put quote marks around the title. If available, your article should appear as one of the first few results: If you click an article's title, you may be taken to a publisher's site that will ask you to pay for full text.
If you find articles in Google Scholar, you would have to look up the journal the article is published in to find out whether they use peer review or not. When using library databases, there are options to restrict to peer review, either from the main search page or usually in the left hand column of the results page.
Look for [DOC], [PDF] or [HTML] on the result list.When you see one of these options, just click on it to get the full text. If you don't see [DOC], [PDF] or [HTML] on the result list, look for All versions--there may be a free full text version there.
