Why am I getting charged a service fee? ›

A service charge is a fee collected to pay for services related to the primary product or service being purchased. The charge is usually added at the time of the transaction. Many industries collect service charges, including restaurants, banking, and travel and tourism.

For diners who see a service charge on their bill, ask your server or the manager what it's for and who it goes to. Service fees can be defined as “wellness fees” or something similar. Since each restaurant decides its policy, some don't make it a requirement and the customer can refuse fees if they don't wish to pay.

A discretionary service charge is added to the client's bill at the end of the service; however, the customer may refuse to pay for a variety of reasons, including dissatisfaction or laziness. A mandatory service charge is exactly that: mandatory, and as such, it must be declared upfront before the service starts.

The main difference between these two fees? A service charge is mandatory, and a tip is at the discretion of the customer. Technically, tipping is optional — but some customers might argue otherwise, given that tip income is critical for the service staff.

Service charges are an amount that tenants pay to cover the cost of providing communal or shared services to a building and, if applicable, the surrounding estate. The way charges are calculated and what they cover are set out in your tenancy agreement.

Credit card customers can dispute any charge that they didn't make, if it is for the wrong amount, or if they're dissatisfied with the product or service they received. Typically, the best first step is to contact the vendor.

“If a restaurant charges a mandatory fee, it must be included in the displayed price,” the guidance states. “Under the law, a restaurant cannot charge an additional surcharge on top of the price listed.”

“Service charges typically appear on a customer's bill with a brief explanation of the purpose of the charge – i.e., to replace tipping, add to back-of-house wages, or offset expenses, depending on the circ*mstance – and the amount or percentage of the charge.

How much? The service charge is based on what a landlord thinks they are going to spend in the coming year. At the end of that year, the landlord should provide a statement of the actual costs. If they exceed the estimate, they can get the shortfall from a leaseholder using something called a "balancing charge".

This is a fixed fee included on every bill that the customer is required to pay. If you don't give your diners a choice to opt out of this service charge, it's crucial to let them know upfront so they don't feel deceived when the check comes.

"Gratuity" is defined in the Labor Code as a tip, gratuity, or money that has been paid or given to or left for an employee by a patron of a business over and above the actual amount due for services rendered or for goods, food, drink, articles sold or served to patrons.

For example, you see service fees for purchase of online concert or movie tickets, and vacation rentals like AirBnB (3%). Service fees from software providers occur across industries from hospitality (AirBnB) to movie tickets (Fandango), concert tickets (Ticketmaster), and food delivery (UberEats).

A fee can be looked at similar to a penalty. While there are no fees attached to your contract, you can be fined for late payments or a returned payment. A charge on the other hand, is an amount that you acknowledge you are purchasing. At origination, the amount you finance is considered a charge.

Etiquette expert and owner of the Protocol School of Texas Diane Gottsman, who spoke with The Post, says bad service is actually a "fair reason to skip a tip."
