AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF) provide opportunities to outstanding scientists and engineers to learn first-hand about policymaking while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills to the federal policymaking process.
The benefits of being a fellow are numerous and include a stipend, a yearlong series of professional development workshops, access to the STPF fellows’ network, professional opportunities for leadership and science communication, and more.
There are four fellowship areas. You may apply for up to two. They are the executive branch fellowship, the judicial branch fellowship, the legislative branch fellowship, and the Roger Revelle Fellowship in Global Stewardship (which places fellows in both nonprofit organizations and the federal government).
Who should apply for a AAAS S&T Policy Fellowship?
Successful candidates:
- Demonstrate exceptional competence in their specialty appropriate to their career stage and have the strong endorsem*nt of three references.
- Show an understanding of the opportunities for science and engineering to support a broad range of non-scientific issues and display a commitment to apply their scientific or technical expertise to serve society.
- Exhibit awareness and sensitivity to political, economic and social issues that influence policy.
- Are articulate communicators, both verbally and in writing, to decision-makers and non-scientific audiences, and have the ability to work with individuals and groups outside the scientific community.
- Demonstrate initiative, problem-solving ability, leadership capacity, and the flexibility and willingness to address policy issues outside their scientific expertise.
