Soldier of Fortune is published by a company owned and operated entirely by Susan Katz Keating, an award winning writer and investigative journalist specializing in conflict and international security. She previously was Senior Editor at the Washington Examiner, and is a longtime contributor to Soldier of Fortune.
As military correspondent for PEOPLE magazine, she has broken stories there and in TIME on the U.S. military and domestic terrorism, and on major crime. She has covered more than 70 mass murder/mass casualty incidents, and has waded into numerous riots while covering domestic unrest. A former Washington Times security reporter, Keating (SKK) is the author of Prisoners of Hope: Exploiting the POW/MIA Myth in America (Random House); Native American Rivalries; Saudi America, A Country Study; and several chapters in Brutal Battles of Vietnam: America’s Deadliest Days.
In her work for Soldier of Fortune, SKK has met with foreign rebel leaders, and with some of the most significant military figures of our day. She has reported on intrigue in pre-war Dubrovnik and Sarajevo, and of action in Belfast and South Armagh during the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.Her work has appeared in Readers Digest, the New York Times, Air&Space, American Legion, VFW, and other publications. She has been cited in the New Yorker, the Wall Street Journal, Salon, and additional journals. She was a founding trustee for the National Museum of Americans in Wartime, and was secretary of the board of Military Reporters & Editors. She was a director of the Travis AFB Museum, and served as restoration crew chief on a B-52.
The magazine was founded in 1975. The publication evolved into an acclaimed adventure magazine that focused on military, professional soldiers, guns, and gear. The print magazine ceased publication in 2016. Six years later, SKK purchased Soldier of Fortune. She took the helm in April of 2022.
Under SKK, Soldier of Fortune has returned to the front lines. Correspondents have gone into the conflict zones of Ukraine; the remote U.S. borderlands where Mexican cartels roam; the poaching fields of Africa; the streets of Brazil; Israel; and elsewhere.
Keating announced in September 2024 that the publication soon would establish foreign bureaus.
The magazine continues to press forward with new stories to deliver honest, engaging journalism.
