Learn about managing ProRes files on an external storage device.

Your iPhone supports these resolutions and frame rates:

  • ProRes support for 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB storage capacity:

    • 4K at 60 frames per second (fps), iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max only, when using an external storage device that supports speeds of at least 220MB per second and maximum power draw of 4.5W

    • 4K at 30 fps, 25 fps, and 24 fps

    • 1080p HD at 60 fps, 30 fps, and 25 fps

Turn on ProRes

About Apple ProRes on iPhone - Apple Support (2)

If you turn ProRes off in the Camera app, the format of the video defaults to the format you set under Camera Capture in Settings > Camera > Formats: either High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or Most Compatible (H.264).

Manage ProRes files

ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. You can store and manage your ProRes files on your iPhone, on iCloud, or with an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, on an external storage device connected with USB-C.

Manage files on your device

To record in ProRes, you need at least 10 percent of the storage in your iPhone to be free. If ProRes is turned on and less than five minutes of recording time is available, the Camera app might free storage automatically.

You can also export large photos or videos from the Photos app to an external storage device. Then, to clear space on your iPhone, delete the video from the Photos app and then delete it permanently from the Recently Deleted album.

Manage files on iCloud

If you use iCloud Photos to store your photos, you might need to upgrade your iCloud storage plan to make more space available for these larger files. iCloud also has limits on file size.

Record ProRes files to an external storage device

With an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can connect an external storage device with USB-C to store or record your ProRes files directly on an external storage device. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Your external storage device must be formatted with APFS or exFAT. Password-encrypted drives aren't supported.

  • Use a USB 3 cable with speed of at least 10 Gbits per second.

  • Your external storage device must write at speeds of at least 220 MB per second. If you attach a slower external storage device, you might get a Slow Recording Speed message.

  • Use the Files app to format your external storage device and manage your ProRes files.

  • To record to your iPhone, disconnect the external storage device.

Use ProRes with Photos and other apps

Apple ProRes has widespread adoption across the video post-production industry, so you can open ProRes files with apps that are compatible with the format. Apps might transcode a ProRes video to a smaller H.264 format if ProRes isn't supported.

Edit a ProRes file

You can edit Apple ProRes files in the Photos app or iMovie on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, Final Cut Pro for iPad and Mac, or in third-party editing apps that support ProRes.

These Apple devices can support ProRes playback and editing:

  • Mac with Mac OS X 10.6 and later

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later

  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) and later

  • iPad Air (5th generation)

  • iPad mini (6th generation)

Share ProRes videos

To share your ProRes video:

  • Use a USB-C or Lightning cable and Image Capture on Mac or a compatible application on a Windows PC to transfer the files.

  • Export your ProRes video to an external storage device.

  • Use iCloud Photos to access the original ProRes video file in full resolution on all of your devices.

  • Use AirDrop to transfer the ProRes file from your iPhone to another iPhone, iPad, or your Mac. Tap Options at the top of the screen, turn on All Photos Data, then tap Done. AirDrop transfers the original ProRes video to supported devices: iPhone 15 models, iPhone 14 models, iPhone 13 models, Mac with Mac OS X 10.6 and later, 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation) and later, 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation) and later, iPad Air (5th generation), and iPad mini (6th generation). For all other devices, you'll share an HEVC video if the devices supports it, or H.264 video if the device doesn't.
