When nominating validators, nominators often make several common mistakes:
1. Trying to find a validator with a commission rate of less than 5%.
2. Adding their nominations to validators with a high number of existing nominators, choosing over-delegated validators.
3. Staking less than 600 DOT through native staking rather than in a pool.
4. Not conducting an analysis of a validator’s performance.
5. Selecting fewer than 16 recommended validators.
We’ll break down the details of these mistakes and provide you with an optimal set of validators below. If you nominate the entire list, you will have the chance to participate contest or get guaranted prize.
Commission Rate Less Than 5%
This is not the primary indicator of success. Most validators have a 5% commission, which is the recommended value from the Thousand Validators Program. If the percentage is lower, the validator usually cuts corners on the technical side, opting for less robust and efficient equipment and location. This may prevent the validator from being active in the network more frequently, ultimately reducing your earnings. Choose a validator with a commission rate of no less than 5% to also help relieve the validator of numerous ineffective nominations. The more nominations a validator has, the less chance your nomination has of being active. That’s why it’s crucial to select a full list of 16 validators.
Nominating Validators with Many Existing Nominations
If you have a small nomination of less than 1000 DOT and the validators you choose have many large nominations, your nomination will also rarely be active in the network. Choose validators that have available slots and free up their nomination lists from nominations below the required minimum of 600 DOT. We have prepared an optimal set of validators for you below.

Staking less than 600 DOT through regular staking is not effective. There are two ways to stake DOT: if you have between 1 and 600 DOT, use Pool #161. Here are the staking instructions for the pool. If you stake less than 500 DOT through the regular application, you won’t be actively participating in the network and won’t earn anything. Pay attention to this, as it’s a very common mistake.
Validator Performance Analysis
Validators currently active in the network may not always be the most optimal choice for staking. Choose validators who are in the waiting list. Select those that are not overloaded with nominations, as this will increase the effectiveness of your staking. Don’t chase a low percentage; a 5% reward for the validator is a fair fee for quality service. We have prepared a list of optimal validators for you.
Choosing Fewer Than 16 Validators
In Polkadot, you can select up to 16 validators in which you trust your stake. Your stake will be allocated to the most efficient validator at any given time. This is crucial because if you nominate only 1 or 2–3 validators, you may receive very low rewards over the course of a month.
