5 common TV screen problems and fixes

1. Distorted picture

Ever encountered a situation where you felt the picture was a little off? Maybe the people on screen look squeezed, cropped or disappearing past the edge of the screen. It can either happen because the aspect ratio is not aligned or the TV signal is being geometrically reflected on the screen.

Go to your TV Settings, and look for options like Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, Zoom, Wide or even Picture. From any of the previous menus that you find on your TV, select Direct or Just Fit. If you find the option to choose an aspect ratio in figures instead of the last two options, opt for 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio options.

2. Unnatural screen movement

If you are experiencing unnatural screen movement on your TV, there is a possibility that your TV is running through the Soap Opera effect. To put it in a few words, while most shows and movies are displayed in either 24FPS or 30FPS, modern TVs have a refresh rate of 120Hz or can display up to 120FPS. The simple solution is turning off the Motion Smoothing option by flipping the switch from Settings. If you are not getting this option, and do have a choice to select Modes instead, choose the TV in Cinema or Movie mode.

3. Colour Correction

Do your TV picture colours look off? It may be too blue or green, or the skin tone may come out as unnaturally yellow. You get it fixed at the first instance by choosing the TV’s movie-focused picture mode that you will find named Calibrated, Cinema or Movie option. If it persists, chances are there might be an issue with the White Balance of your TV.

Go to the Picture menu from settings, and find a value named Colour temperature or White Balance. From all the options you find, like Cool, Warm, and Normal, select Warm from the drop-down which may fetch the most accurate colour results.
