Crochet Stitches
While most granny stitches are made with the double crochet stitch (dc) you will from time to time see other stitches used.
Commonly, when you are crocheting a granny square, you will work double crochet clusters (or three double crochets) into one stitch to create a traditional granny square.
While a few of the squares use double crochet stitches, there are some below that will use a variety of stitches instead.
Crochet Stitches in a Granny Square
Double Crochet (dc):
- Wrap the yarn over (Yo) the hook, insert the hook into the specified st.
- Yo the hook again, draw the yarn through the st, so there are 3 loops on the hook
- Yo the hook again draw it through 2 loops, so there are 2 loops on the hook
- Yo the hook, draw it through the final 2 loops.

Magic Circle:
- The magic circle method is an adjustable loop (aka magic ring or a magic loop) technique that quickly starts a crochet project in the round that has a yarn tail that pulls to close the center hole when tightly closed.
Be sure to look over each of the square designs below before you start. This will help you understand what the square requires in terms of skill.

The Yarn For Crocheted Squares
I love using all types of yarn and yarn weights for square projects. Below are a few of my favorite yarns to make granny squares with.
I do tend to use Lion Brand yarns such as Vanna’s Choice and the Thick & Quick lines. These are easily my go-to yarns when crocheting a square (or any type of) crochet pattern. Learn more about each yarn below.
Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice: Vanna’s Choice is a 100% acrylic, four weight yarn that is easy to find, available in beautiful colors and is fairly inexpensive.

Other Supplies to Make Granny Squares
Crochet Hook: You will also need a crochet hook to make a granny square. The crochet hook size will depend on the yarn you use, so check the label to see which hook is recommended on the label.
Stitch Markers: Stitch markers help mark your stitches and place in a pattern. If you would like to be extra sure of what stitch count you are on or where your first stitch is, then these are a good to have on hand.
Scissors: A good pair of scissors is essential to working with yarn. I have a special pair of stork scissors that are a yarn only cutting pair.
