The United States federal government has several different security clearances that are used to determine an individual's level of access to classified information. These clearances are granted based on the nature of the information involved and the level of risk associated with its disclosure. Here are the main security clearances in ascending order of sensitivity:

  1. Confidential (C): This is the lowest level of security clearance. It grants access to information or material that, if disclosed without authorization, could reasonably be expected to cause damage to national security.
  2. Secret (S): Secret clearance is the next level up from Confidential. It allows access to information or material that, if disclosed without authorization, could reasonably be expected to cause serious damage to national security.
  3. Top Secret (TS): Top Secret clearance is the highest level of security clearance for most government employees. It grants access to information or material that, if disclosed without authorization, could reasonably be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to national security.
  4. Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI): TS/SCI is a subset of Top Secret clearance and is required for access to highly sensitive information known as Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI). SCI is classified information concerning intelligence sources, methods, and other sensitive matters.

In addition to these primary clearances, there are also certain special access programs (SAPs) that require additional clearances beyond TS/SCI. These programs involve highly sensitive information, such as specific classified projects or operations, and access is granted on a need-to-know basis.

It's important to note that the process and criteria for obtaining security clearances are rigorous, involving background investigations, interviews, and evaluations of an individual's character, trustworthiness, and loyalty to the United States. The specific requirements and procedures may vary depending on the agency or department involved.
