There are four main components of a time series: trend, which is a long-term movement; cycles, which are medium-term fluctuations; seasonality, which are short-term and regular fluctuations; and irregularity, which are unpredictable short-term changes.

Secular trend, which describe the movement along the term; Seasonal variations, which represent seasonal changes; Cyclical fluctuations, which correspond to periodical but not seasonal variations; Irregular variations, which are other nonrandom sources of variations of series.

There are three types of time series patterns: trend, seasonal, and cyclic. A trend pattern exists when there is a long-term increase or decrease in the series. The trend can be linear, exponential, or different one and can change direction during time.

Seasonality is always of a fixed and known period. Hence, seasonal time series are sometimes called periodic time series. A cyclic pattern exists when data exhibit rises and falls that are not of fixed period. The duration of these fluctuations is usually of at least 2 years.

Irregular variation is also called random variation. This type of variation occurs in the time series, if there is certain abnormal behaviour in the circ*mstances that affects the series. Irregular variation is caused due to factors such as wars, earthquake, floods, strike etc that are unpredictable in nature.

Time series analysis can be used to analyse historic data and establish any underlying trend and seasonal variations within the data. The trend refers to the general direction the data is heading in and can be upward or downward. The seasonal variation refers to the regular variations which exist within the data.

Trend is a pattern in data that shows the movement of a series to relatively higher or lower values over a long period of time. In other words, a trend is observed when there is an increasing or decreasing slope in the time series.
